Clearly its been a pretty bad month for the NRA. I heard it myself from irrefutable sources at The Hill.
NRA stumbles in fight with Obama over gun-control proposals
Television commentator Joe Scarborough, a former GOP member of the House, hammered the groups leaders for creating a fringe organization.
Their children have targets on their backs and the NRA is putting something out like [this]? Whats wrong with these people? Scarborough said Wednesday on his Morning Joe program on MSNBC.
They need new leadership is what they need. Their leadership has dragged them over the cliff, they are now a fringe organization, added Scarborough, who routinely mentions he maintained an A-rating from the NRA through his tenure in the House. What the NRA once was, it no longer is. This extremism is so frightening, and just over, over, over the line.
Well, that certainly is bad news. Unless, of course, you listen to right wing nutjob, fringe conservative sites like The Washington Post.
But, theres also plenty of evidence to suggest that the NRA is regarded entirely differently in the country at large. Polling conducted by NBC News and the Wall Street Journal this week showed 41 percent of people had a favorable opinion of the NRA, while 34 percent viewed it unfavorably, a margin largely unchanged from a similar survey conducted in January 2011.
And a look at the longer-term trend line on views of the NRA by Gallup suggests a striking consistency in the overall impression Americans have of the gun rights group.
Heres the graphic attached with the Gallup polling.

Its worth pointing out that with 54%, at least from the running Gallup survey, the NRA is still currently more popular than President Obama...

I am part of a couple of fringe organizations that are more popular than Obama.
NRA and US Military.
We are many.
It’s probably even more that way than the article assumes. They automatically assume that all of the 34% who dislike the NRA think they’re too extremist. I bet half the 34% that doesn’t like them think they’re appeasers, in which case the poll would actually be running 58-17 pro-rights.
And ole Joe ain't what he used to be either..... a republican.
They need new leadership is what they need. Their leadership has dragged them over the cliff, they are now a fringe organization, added Scarborough, who routinely mentions he maintained an A-rating from the NRA through his tenure in the House. What you once was, no longer is either, Joe. You used to be a Republican and alleged Conservative. You have now transformed yourself into a Dem and lefty, just like your colleagues on PMSNBC. You fit right in now, Joe. Feel better Judas?
250,000 new members last month.
The Dem/libs have been engaging in a slow but steady push to limit our right to own guns and reduce the number of guns in private hands for decades. And this is how it has been working out for them in the last two decades...
If the lefties keep pushing gun control this way in another two decades one out of two Americans may be gun owners instead of one out of three.
MOLON LAVE! meanwhile WE'LL BUY MORE!!!
Mandatory background check on him!!!!
Well Joe the point the NRA is making, and it is the obvious message to be taken from Newtown is that no ones child is safe in a school that does not permit weapon in the school be they carried by a uniformed policeman or by the regular staff.
Only a fool blinded by his ideology could fail to see the sense of schools having armed persons onsite to protect the defenseless children.
‘Their children have targets on their backs and the NRA is putting something out like [this]?...’
I don’t believe Morning Blow and the MSM at large know where the targets are painted come survival time and all liabilities must be eliminated whilst assets are preserved. They probably think the coming dictatorship is only going to be killing us “bitter clingers”.
Sidwell Friends school (where the Obama girls attend) have 11 armed guards whether or not the girls are there. The Secret Service personnl are over and above those eleven. I doubt that many other private schools of that size have that many (if any) such personnel. Do your kids have eleven armed men keeping the bad guys away?
Well my kids are grown. But while they were in school there was a Resource Officer on school grounds every day.
I believe the uniformed armed policeman/woman was there to keep the kids in line (more or less).
At least one of them that I knew personally seemed to spend most of his time doing just that.
It is a small school district about 900 students K-12, all on one campus on which all of the building connect.
A determined killer who knew the layout intimately could undoubtedly kill a good number of children and staff before the officer could stop him especially if he stayed on the move.
Having only one officer on the campus is insufficient for a school of any normal size.
I don’t particularly like or dislike guns. They’re simply tools, no different really than cars or hammers, and I haven’t ever had much use for them. That said, the left makes me want to go out and buy some. Without guns, there’s no defense against hordes of criminals or an all powerful, totalitarian state, both of which could occur after an economic collapse. The founders were right, and no one except criminals and statists need fear an armed citizenry. I feel the need to be prepared for the worse.
I think you’re right but it’s a personal decision and a serious one. I don’t think that it’s a necessity to own a firearm to appreciate and support the 2nd Amendment and what it stands for. But that appreciation becomes more personal when you do. FWIW one never knows when the worst will happen to them and the tool you’ll really need is a gun. It is certainly time to let the government know they’re stepping over the line though IMO.
Perhaps I should add that you can join the NRA right now, for a year, for $25 and you don’t have to own a gun. The swelling numbers of their membership sends an unmistakable message.
250,000 new members last month and they’re still coming in.
Relying solely on government for the defense of your family is the most shameful level of welfare dependency.
Do you agree that medical professionals should be required to kill living babies that result from botched late-term abortions?
Yes: 18%
No: 82%
Therefore the country is now 82/18 pro-life, and the issue is settled.
