When is it time to get out of Dodge? Experts have their say

I think that the first question to answer is why are you leaving. How is it that you are improving your situation by doing that? In general, the standard answer is that you only leave when staying isn’t an option. Staying in a secured, known location, where you have assets, supplies and a network of people you know and trust is the best thing to do as long as you can do it.

Prepping needs to be defined in two different forms.
Prepping for natural or civil disasters and prepping
to get the H out of Dodge when life in one’s country
becomes untenable.
Prepping is totally different for each scenario.
I do watch the “Prepper” series on TV.
Some of them are quite extravagant, but very iffy, depending on the type of disaster and location.

Well, at the risk of blowing a little OPSEC, here's a few things that are going on here....

Our own MAG (aka "The Tribe") has a core team which maintains the focal point of the group, the residence we code-named "The Bunker". The Bunker's location is near enough to services and resources, as well as secondary routes for easy access by road and foot. Tribe members not located at The Bunker are close enough that either a ruck march or a short vehicle trip over secondary roads will bring them here.

Pre-arranged signals will trigger the bug-in order. Should a crisis begin to unfold, the command group at The Bunker issues a single-word signal to the far-flung Tribe members, and they equip and arm themselves and make their way. Routes are already planned for members from their respective workplaces, with alternate routes and link-up points to travel together for safety. School-age members have strict orders to exfil the campus, and escape/evade back to another Tribe member's location for linkup and rendezvous at The Bunker.

Once the Tribe assembles, the bug-in begins. The command group monitors their progress and ETA; manages pre-positioned stocks and arranges billeting; and briefs the Tribe on the current situation. The command group also monitors local comms, such as Ham, media, and state/county emergency management and, most importantly, establishes contact with other groups in the region with whom The Tribe has loose alliance. When all is copacetic, The Bunker settles in for routine ops: duty rosters, local security, contact teams, and housekeeping chores.

By now, you might be asking the question, "What could trigger The Tribe's contingency plans?" As I said before, we performed Threat Analysis on our own tactical situation. What are the threats which we have to deal with?

1. WEATHER... We are in Florida, the Lightning Capital of the Nation, as well as being under the gun for just about every tropical cyclone that spawns. Weather events are the most common and most pressing threats we have, because of all the sub-threat categories involved: Heat Waves, Flooding, Power Loss, Evacuation, Tornadoes, and the Disruption of the Distribution Chain;

2. CIVIL DISORDER... We are dealing right now with the Zimmerman Kangaroo Court near Orlando, which the forces of the political Left have sworn to exploit. There are simmering cauldrons of race-hate forming in every major city in the state. A tide of civil unrest could cause the entitlement class to come boiling out of the urban kraals;

3. THE REGIME... We all know the endless stories, scenarios, and horror emails about "the coming future time", as Orwell put it.

With Natural Disaster weighing in overwhelmingly at #1, that is what The Tribe has prepped for the most. The Bunker is essentially storm-proof, on higher ground and outside all evacuation areas. With the location being "off the beaten path", The Bunker can sustain itself and The Tribe for the duration of any weather event in relative comfort.

In the event of a man-made crisis, The Bunker and The Tribe are prepared to defend in place and prosecute to drive off.

I’ve been following the series and will evaluate their recommendations for my own situation. While the most probable events I’ve planned for are weather related and would not require evacuation/bugging out, my primary trigger are associated with the break down of civil order. This requires constant situational awareness.

This past weekend I and the wife drove our primary evac/bugout route to familiarize her with it (I’ve driven it before). Made for a nice day drive which we took the opportunity to stop by an ARRL club field day site. Physical recon of escape routes is a must as well as planning in advance to avoid the obvious main roads that will double as a parking lot if the SHTF. My main route has three variants if there are other traffic issues.

During hurricanes even the backroads will be bad.

They were during Rita.

Solid plan.

Since you mentioned high ground, I kinda get the gist of where you likely are WRT ‘greater Orlando.’ Good area.

If you haven’t already done so, I strongly recommend you augment your training and real world experience with the following books:

#1 with a bullet, http://www.afailureofcivility.com/

A failure of civility. AFOC Great guide and refresher.

Secondly, look up “CONTACT” by Max Velocity ( a nom de plume of course)

http://www.amazon.com/Contact-Tactical-Collapse-Survival-ebook/dp/B008GHZ7NE

Again, a good, practical refresh of what you already know, but it can be a great read for other tribe members.

FWIW, “Max” will shortly be selling field tested ‘FLIR-proof’ IR tarps/ponchos. Just google Max velocity tactical.

Just my 8 cents.

Thanks for your post; it made me think.

LOL! Funny you mention AFOC - it occupies a prominent place in the library.

And thank you for Max’s link - that will be a neat bonus...

Six miles outside of Sanford on 46 would be a good spot to stop them coming out of the kraal ;-)

Just sayin’

I took my copy of AFOC and removed the pages from the paper binding. I 3-hole punched all the pages and turned it into a tabbed binder/ manual with a custom index.

It’s just to the left of me right now, next to the locked ‘armory’.

I have been considering reflective insulation as anti-FLIR material. What is your opinion. Thanks.

I know I have posted to Old Sarge on this before so this is for others. Civilization broke down in just three days in NW Jersey after Sandy. I am not talking about Newark or Camden or Trenton. I am talking solid GOP bastion. I would put our congress critter-Scott Garrett in top 10-20. Gas lines, brawls, guns drawn, pandemonium. Admittedly, we are not hurricane ready and it was a bit of a shock. After reading a FReepers post, I said to heck with it, and filled up both our cars in 15 minutes. The next day the lines were several hours long. That little trick made all the difference as I was able to bugout to Pennsy, pick up supplies, and get back. Oh, and a wood burning stove which just happened to come with the house. I can’t imagine full blown civil pandemonium. I started upping my prep game. Great warning. Take it seriously FReepers. It ain’t pretty.

It’s time to get out of Albuquerque when all the green chili is gone. That would be a disaster.

Seriously, I think a pandemic or nationwide emergency would cause me to leave for the northern part of the state before gas gets scarce and the roads get blocked.

“During hurricanes even the backroads will be bad.”
“They were during Rita.”

Jane, you and I have talked about the disaster on the roads before Rita got here. Anyone who was on that road, would never be in that situation again. They would either leave very early or stay home.

What bothered me was, the people on 45, about two/three blocks from my house, could not get off to go east on regular roads. They were forced to stay on 45. I kept thinking of all the roads off 45 in this area going east and no one could exit to go on those roads.

My hurricane plans are made, I'm staying home, and I have gone over these plans several times with my other family member, my Yorkie, so she knows what to do - get in her bed and sleep through it. She knows there is plenty of food for her stored and plenty of good water and plenty of her potty pads.

I did get, in the past month, two low metal doggie gates to put one at the front and back door, so when power goes off and I put up the screens and leave the doors open for a draft of air through the house, she can't walk through the split screens held together by magnets, and take off to the outside world.

Maybe Old Sarge will get the hurricanes and I won't.
