Why many preppers will die
SHTF School ^ | 3/7/14 | Selco

His story is not so unique, but I know much more stories about how folks got killed because they refused to leave their home (and run) when under attack by several people armed with firearms, while they were unarmed, or armed with pistol or knife, clearly outnumbered.

I read every day on web sentences like “having this gun will save you when SHTF” or “with this BOB you can not lose when SHTF”. Of course this is marketing crap from people who want to sell you something.

Please do not get yourself killed, or allow your family to die when SHTF just because you put your “perfect” BOB on, your “zombie survival” rifle in your hands and went out to save the world.

Or to get killed because you “draw line and here you stand your ground” for example when they attack your home or your storage. Do you really want to die just to hold onto things?

Discussions of “bugging out” typically settle into the realization that it is viable for about 3 days. Yes, sometimes you’re on your own under adverse conditions RIGHT NOW - like thousands in Atlanta a few weeks back when a freak ice storm hit at rush hour. That’s what you’re “bugging out” from. Prepping accordingly is a good idea.

Leaving society completely is a different discussion.

“HOLY CRAP baby you made the big leagues. I’M IMPRESSED!!!”

I was stunned when I read his email. I wondered how he ever found those articles. Plus, I wrote them in the Women’s Section of Survival Podcast. I’m guessing the amount of hits got his attention. The hits are now 46,778 and both men and women read them.

Both you and I know when you write an article or post, it’s a solitary business to write them and you don’t know what the reception will be when it’s out there in the public - zero could read them or we may get hammered by readers, but we do it anyway because it has meaning for us and we want others to know that information. We write and take our chances.

I thought so too...But they have a “rule”, Too bad so many older citizens spend so much time thinking of their ills instead of their abilities. It makes the rest of us seem like them. So I can’t do a job for 20 hours straight...didn’t they ever hear of job sharing?

For every thug you kill, some other prepper and family may live.

In the immortal words of Bugs Bunny; "Their victory will be costly"

Prepping should include a group of like-minded people who are willing to work together.

While I have some medical supplies, and other stuff. If a long term situation comes up, restocking could be necessary, but not readily available.

That’s why, I also look into how we could resupply ourselves independently. Just like you have ammo making capability.

I want to be able to restock all the necessities possible.

“Are you ready to shoot a 12 year old girl that comes to your door begging for food?”

A rule: Don’t open the door - you don’t know who is there.

I’ve read the same articles that S.A.M. quotes from Selco.

What even MORE scary than ex-cops or ex-troops forming gangs, is the face-in-the-crowd types whose inner demon rears up.

Selco describes the guy next door, the absolute nebbish who never got noticed by anyone - who became the most ruthless underworld kingpin during SHTF, once all the societal norms vanished. He was freed to channel his inner monster.

You can’t know if the dweeb at the cash register at Home Depot will turn into The Governor from Walking Dead. You can’t know if that nice sweet girl at the Antioch Primitive Baptist Church might be a Ladies Auxiliary in the Bloods.

SHTF brings out the worst. It can also bring out the best. But you have to watch for the worst.

“SHTF brings out the worst. It can also bring out the best. But you have to watch for the worst.”

In my post 112 I was answering the fellow who said if a 12 yr. old girl was starving at the front door, would you feed her? You can’t act as normal in a SHTF situation. Normally, someone knocks on the door (or rings the door bell when there is power) we are programmed to open the door. In a SHTF situation, don’t open the door because you don’t know who is there and you are bugging in, being quiet that you are there.

The next time your doorbell rings or there is a knock, don’t open the door so you can experience the strong urge you have to open the door.

Since I live alone, I don’t open my door after dark (unless I know someone is coming). That doesn’t happen often, but when it does, I have to force myself not to open the door.

We need to think now how our behavior has to change when the SHTF. I have plain old lady type clothes to wear in case I absolutely had to go out my front door. If it’s a case that water has been off for a while, I won’t look totally clean, either. There will be stains on the old lady look clothes and my hair won’t be perfectly done and there won’t be any makeup on my face, and definitely no jewelry on.

Every person is suspect when it comes to your safety - I won’t trust anyone who is outside my house and I’m not opening the door.

Part of your prepping needs to be information.

“Plants that Heal”, “Herbal Remedies” and several other books are a MUST have. I highly recommend the “Foxfire” series.

Have the parts to make a still. Alcohol is a great medical supply and would be a useful barter item. Buy all the .22 rimfire ammo you can afford/store.
