No updates in awhile?

Your manual is still being downloaded from time to time.

I've a friend who lives in a small town In W.Va. he showed me his setup once. It is a large commercial building and it is mostly deserted (The Obama economy destroyed the small town and businesses have been closing there since late 2009)

The building is huge but he has remodeled it over the years and it has a large hidden Apartment in it with a well concealed garden on the roof (very clever design that can't be seen from the surrounding territory)

He has a garage that would take explosives to get inside and it is connected by a hidden tunnel in the basement of his apartment building.

All the windows of the apartment are hidden by the balconies and he has used a clever system of vegetation and construction to still allow a goodly amount of light in yet no one can see it from other buildings or ground level.. He built a rain collection system and has solar panels that are hidden on the roof (He built them into decorative panels) And the really clever bit is his wife who does all these crazy sculptures out of reclaim stuff made this awesome windmill but its real purpose is to charge his massive Deep cycle battery system.

His potable water storage is huge he had these big tanks placed in his basement and then he put up false walls around them. They are all plumped together and he has a 12 volt pump system that allows his to circulate and pump the water and he stockpiles chemicals to treat the water if he needs to add rain water to it from his rainwater system.

He claims he and his wife and kids can shelter in place for over a year and never need to leave the hidden parts of the building.

Of course he is well to do and has been all of his life so he can afford it. But he has been putting the whole thing together for over 20 years.

“Actually the best way to survive is to organize your neighbors into a viable defense force. I recommend “A Failure of Civility” by Mike Garand and Jack Lawson that will teach you to how to do just that. If you are a veteran you could join Oath Keepers and participate in their Civilization Preservation Teams project. Otherwise the bad guys will just pick you off one at a time.”

Another step in that is to not live within about 50 miles of a major metropolitan area. Once the gasoline supplies run out it will be hard for thugs to get that far out in any numbers. A town of 20-50K population in a farming area will be able to defend itself and provide for the inhabitants much better than an individual in the woods.

Hammer, meet nail. Having a defensible space is the key and in most cases, that “space” is not in your current neighborhood. Later this year, Mrs. Spook and I will begin looking for a small, hilltop cabin about 3-4 hours from our home. If we can’t find one, we’ll build it—the cabin will become our retirement home in a few years. In the meantime, we can stockpile long-term survival supplies at the location, along with what we need to defend it. We’ll register our 4WD vehicle in that area, and shift our residency down there as well. When SHTF, and the locals are turning away outsiders, having the right plates on your car (and registration in your glove box) can mean the difference between getting in and being turned away.

Without going into details, we have what we need to get from our current home to the bug-out location quickly. Knowing when to leave is also essential. Better to err on the side of caution and leave ahead of the masses; by then, it’s too late. I’m also leery of plans to organize the neighborhood; unfortunately, most suburbanites don’t have any interest in doing that and when the brown stuff hits the fan blades, it will be too late.

“He claims he and his wife and kids can shelter in place for over a year and never need to leave the hidden parts of the building.”

I can do the same thing in my townhouse and never leave it. Consider my townhouse the really cheap version of his. Solar panel, purified water, food for a year, fresh veggies, cooling, warmth, security, cooking ability seven ways, etc.. Mine is not elaborate like his but I can survive unless I am attacked by a mob who breach security. Mob would have to know there is something here and there is no way for them to identify that so they would want to come in. I surely wish I had his, it seems perfect. Now, I hope he doesn’t go on TV and show it to everyone.

Howcum no one else survived the ship running aground? The captain was killed by a falling spar, but what about all the others?

If I remember the book, the crew abandoned ship, just prior to the storm or just after the Captain died because of the pirates. The Family was basically locked into their cabin by order of the captain when the Pirates showed up the first time.

The family didn’t have a small boat to go back and forth to shore and used rafts made from emptied casks the fresh water had been carried in.

true what you say. I am blessed to live in a small neighborhood in the PNW. When I’m in Hawaii, I would survive quite well if I were a cannibal because 99% of the people in Kailua couldn’t function with a one day shut down of the local Whole Foods grocery store.

My whole response was not to offend anyone who has a great bug out plan. It looks like you have a great opportunity being where you are and I’m envious of your ability to have a cabin in the woods. The great many of us do not have the ability or luxury of a cabin in the woods and many do not have the health and ability to make the journey. I overlooked large cities. Certainly being in Los Angeles is different than Sandpoint. In LA, you’re screwed regardless of your preparations and I do believe in that situation your best bet is to stay put IF you don’t have somewhere to go. If you walk out your door with your BOB, wife, and 3 kids in tow, you are a refugee at the mercy of your surroundings. At that point, I can’t say what is better. Stay put, or BO.

This assumes that you will be near a city and gangs will come to get you and your family.

What is missing is something that you guys could learn from the LDS folks or from those of us living in the Philippines: your security is family and friends not guns.

So when the typhoon hit, families take refuge with their family members who were on higher ground, or with friends or the homes of their employers. One of the most important lessons was a cellphone to keep in touch with relatives.

Yes, have a “bug out bag”...more important than guns.

And illness will be more fatal and more common than being shot.

Neighbors are Democrats in denial, so do not want to tell them what I plan.

Survival groups seem to have age limits and I am over their limit. Their loss, I have a great deal to offer.

That is some set-up.

I have a hideaway up in a enclosed area under a tile roof. I cut a way in and replaced insulation etc.

Food and water, but I do not know how long before I have to come down...probably have to break through drywall in a closet. If looters are gone, I might be OK and able to stay in place with other hidden supplies...and Liberty Safe!

Leaving my dog to survive on his own makes it hard to imagine. Lots to think about but I feel I have to try to survive.

Age is irrelevant as long as you have a skill set such as combat veteran, nursing, farming, machinist, etc.

“with this BOB you can not lose when SHTF”.

For those of you who don't know, BOB stands for big 'ol butt. Example: "With this big 'ol butt, you cannot lose, when the SHTF." It's symbolic of the suburban endurance and will to survive (delays starvation). Just ask any neighbor who resembles Homer Simpson.

I live just outside a small town. Our subdivision and town have a history of helping each other during emergencies. My block has had a lot of new people move in though that we don’t know that well.

Now that you mention it, we could probably prevent traffic from the big city, but then that would also destroy the ability to transport supplies especially medical supplies.
