Please help! I need a job in the Tulsa area immediately! In danger of being homeless by sept. 8th!

Posted on 08/17/2016 10:57:18 AM PDT by acad1228

I'm a 54 year old draftsman. I've been unemployed since March 2nd. I've been to 31 job interviews after applying to over 60 companies. No one wants to hire a 54 year-old man who is confined to a wheel chair.

When I was laid off from my job of over 22 years, I finally bit the bullet and filed for disability. I was approved, but I won't start receiving payments until October 26th. My rent on this place is due on Sept. 8th but my last unemployment check won't cover it. My wife and I are both disabled and out of much needed meds.

I'm not some damned bum looking to let the government take care of me. I've worked hard all my life. Since I graduated high school, I've rarely worked less than 40 hours per week. I actually calculated it and I've paid in well over $200,000 in State and Federal taxes.

Please, if anyone knows of a job in the Tulsa area that I could do from a wheel chair, let me know. It will be painful, but it's nothing I haven't been dealing with for over the past ten years.

It doesn't even have to be long term. Just enough to get me through to the end of October.

Try flooring, bathroom, kitchen, and remodels companies.....even home depo.
They all need people to do design layouts for customers...
Good luck in your search

How much do you need to tide you over? Also, even if you miss one month rent, that should just start the clock ticking on an eviction proceeding, which often take months. Don’t panic.

To be honest I need to make about $2500 to $3000. My wife is trying to sell her car for the cash. It's worth well over $3000 according to Kelley Blue Book, but no who is interested can come even close.

In Oklahoma, you get 30 days on an eviction notice. That would mean I would be homeless starting on October 8th. I could rent a new place on October 26th, but I don't think I would survive the interim.

If I remember correctly, you’re paid from the date of your approval - less any legal fees, which are capped by SS if you use a lawyer to file. So you should get a lump sum check from the date you’re approved to they day it’s actually automatically deposited.

Info on assistance - there might be others. http://www.incog.org/agency_on_aging/directory/aaa_directory_urgent_needs.html

I'm already registered with INCOG. They will start helping me sometime in mid September.

In NYC, a very tenant friendly state, eviction proceedings can take years, and often do.

Also, even if you miss one month rent, that should just start the clock ticking on an eviction proceeding, which often take months. Don’t panic. Here in Washington state for the last 30 years or so the landlord/tenant law forbids evicting a tenant in less than six months.

? In WA it takes a few weeks at the most. Unlawful detainer actions are purposely designed to be fast and easy.

  1. After rent is unpaid a 3-day pay-or-vacate notice is posted - fail to pay in three days and nothing can save you. E.g., LL does not have to accept payment after the 3-days has elapsed.
  2. Then eviction complaint is filed. 10-14 days later you are in default (or you go to the trial) and the only question at trial is whether the 3-day pay-or-vacate notice is valid and whether the tenant paid up within the 3-days or not.
  3. Judge issues eviction order and money judgment including LL's attorney fees. This will follow evicted tenant forever making it more difficult/impossible to find future rental housing.
  4. Then it may take a couple of weeks to get with the Sheriff to execute the eviction if tenant is still on-premises.

I sent my resume to Smalygo. They haven’t replied and I can never reach anyone to inquire about the job.

Try ClearanceJobs, too. Maybe even for pending contracts. If hired, that might help you.

This oppty has no location preference.

Have you contacted your landlord? This is just a matter of weeks.

Is the landlord hostile to you? Is there any reason he’d go right to an eviction proceeding after failure to pay September 1st?

Can you make a good faith payment on the 1st - not all you owe but some? Maybe that will make the landlord happy and you can reach an agreement on the September-October rent.

This really shouldn’t be terribly controversial, especially if you’re acting in good faith and have a decent relationship with the landlord.

Won’t your landlord give you a months respite while you wait for the disability check to kick in?

No she won't. She's been burned too many times. She owns dozens of houses and had too many bad experiences.

Just goes to prove one should not speak unless speaking with a voice of experience. Having never been evicted I must admit that I was speaking from all of the horror stories I have read in the past of landlords trying to evict people who cannot pay the rent and the nightmares that ensued for them.

Not sure what the time frame is though after the 5 day notice has expired, before the landlord actually gets the necessary court documents to have the eviction executed.

Perhaps talking directly to the landlord and working out something might be of benefit.

What engineering discipline do you draft for?

I've been doing structural for 31 years, but I can do Architectural, Piping and Mechanical.

5 day notice to quit; serve with a FED, at least 3 days to hearing; 2 days to vacate from the Writ of Execution.

So it may be as short as two weeks in Oklahoma.

Well I wouldn’t hire you either if you’re telling them you only need work til the end of Oct......most employees wouldn’t. Since you just need a fill gap...why not go to the “Temporary Services” in your area.....those are short term assignments...but if you have the skill they will find a place for you.

No! I'm not telling them that! If I get a job, I'm telling the Social Security That I'll just work through the pain like I've always done. If I can get a job, I will at least have regained some of my pride. I've worked in pain for over 10 years, I can do it for another 12 years when I can retire.
