Of course, the Judge who imposes the sentence may be a bleeding-heart leftist, and may dismiss this crap as a ‘youthful indiscretion’ (whatever) but I think it would send a strong message if they get the maximum sentence allowed by law.

Reality is a bitch but it cuts both ways. In the 1960s NYS passed the Rockefeller Drug laws that mandated very heavy sentences for even first time low level offenders. What happened? Juries would not convict and eventually the law had to be gutted. Eighty years is the type sentence that will bring jury nullification in a place like DC. Make it four years and everybody will get convicted and the point will be made.
