.................................................................
The Poetry Branch has been in limbo since the prior hostess left FreeRepublic April 15th 2003. We've since learned that said hostess has lost her posting privilege. That being the case, and Jim Robinson having given his ok, I wanted to renew the thread.
FreeRepublic is blessed with many fine poets, and we look forward to seeing their poems posted on FR once again. There were many non-poet FReepers who visited the Poetry Branch for the camaraderie; we hope they will return.
I would like to invite everyone to visit and relax at Poetry and Potpourri. Hopefully you will renew old acquaintances for chatting, sharing jokes, telling stories, posting cartoons, etc. Everyone needs a place to escape from the everyday news, make Poetry and Potpourri that place.

The Leaf and the Tree
by Edna St. Vincent Millay
When will you learn, myself, to be
a dying leaf on a living tree?
Budding, swelling, growing strong,
Wearing green, but not for long,
Drawing sustenance from air,
That other leaves, and you not there,
May bud, and at the autumn's call
Wearing russet, ready to fall?
Has not this trunk a deed to do
Unguessed by small and tremulous you?
Shall not these branches in the end
To wisdom and the truth ascend?
And the great lightning plunging by
Look sidewise with a golden eye
To glimpse a tree so tall and proud
It sheds its leaves upon a cloud?
Here, I think, is the heart's grief:
The tree, no mightier than the leaf,
Makes firm its root and spreads it crown
And stands; but in the end comes down.
That airy top no boy could climb
Is trodden in a little time
By cattle on their way to drink.
The fluttering thoughts a leaf can think,
That hears the wind and waits its turn,
Have taught it all a tree can learn.
Time can make soft that iron wood.
The tallest trunk that ever stood,
In time, without a dream to keep,
Crawls in beside the root to sleep.

A blonde is driving down the road. She notices that she is low on gas, so she stops at the gas station. While she's pumping her gas, she notices that she had locked the keys in the car. So when she goes inside to pay, the blonde asks the attendant for a coat hanger so she can attempt to open the door herself.
She goes outside and begins to jimmy the lock. Ten minutes later, the attendant goes outside to see how the blonde is faring. The blonde outside of the car is moving the hanger around and around.
Meanwhile, the blonde inside of the car is saying, "A little more to the left. A little more to the right ... "

I Married The Marine Corps
Author Unknown
Oh, I am a Marine wife.
I know because I see
That everywhere I go now
That is my identity.
I love my Marine so much,
It is him that I did marry
But without my trusty ID card
I can't go to the commissary.
I stood there at the altar
Thinking I would be his wife
But he had already said I DO
And made the Marines his life.
In my heart I know just how he feels
I know I am his only,
But when he left to do his thing
I felt so sad and lonely.
I was never one to do things the easy way
So I married a Marine
I knew a husband could get on your nerves
So I have one that is seldom seen.
It is like the eternal honeymoon
Gone for days and then comes home.
When he is on my last nerve
They take him somewhere to roam.
If I did not like his leaving-
His command would say "Who Cares?"
A wife is not issued in boot camp-
Along with his other wares.
So, I married the Marine Corps
The Brotherhood of Men.
I know he will come home soon
But I hurry up and wait until then.

It's great waking up to that delicious coffee and the note of inspiration. It's a wonderful way to start the day.
Good morning, Mayor, and thank you!

I Like the Simple Things of Every Day
I like the simple things of every day,
The sun when it shines through the plate-glass door,
And breaks into rainbows that dance and play
On books in their cases, and rugs on the floor.
I like the lace doily on my rocking chair,
The restful lines of the well-worn divan
To which, when weary, I often repair
to regain my vigor, or to read, or plan.
I like red roses in a crystal vase,
Centering the table of spotless white
And around the board in accustomed place,
The faces of those most dear to my sight.
I find endless pleasure in simple things,
Faith, and laughter, and the love of a friend,
Neither fame nor luxury ever brings,
Blessings like these that endure to the end.

Didn't take a pic of it yet, I still have the other suitcase to fix up with something.
(The first case is a small tote type. Second one, not done yet, is a large suitcase type.)
That, and I had no film in the cam.
!!!{:(
So, that will by needs must and has to - wait.
(I'm relapsing into mil speak!!)
However, I do have plans on snapping a shot that hopefully takes.
Just crossing my fingers that no-one sees said luggage art and thinks it's valuable.. and razor blades it off of the luggage.
It's only valuable to me or the owner.
I'm not well known outside the local art group/local area I'm in.
(Translation, only other local artists know that my work exists..)
