A Comment on the Atmosphere of FR
A concerned FReeper | December 30, 2004 | K1avg

Posted on 12/30/2004 12:26:25 PM PST by K1avg

For the past several months, fate has conspired to keep me away from the computer. I haven't posted nearly as much on FR as I used to. With the holidays, though, I've had an opportunity to catch up a bit.

What I found on my return is a bit disconcerting. While there's always been an element here that refuses to reason and does little more than insult Democrats and RINOs, it seems that this mentality has taken over a large portion of our membership. I've encountered more shrill, radical nonsense in the past couple of days than I had in the months before my absence.

Certainly it's acceptable to gloat a bit after our enormous gains on November 2, but I do believe it's about time to get back to normal business.

Referring to Democrats as “Rats” or some variant thereof may be somewhat amusing, but seeing the reference in nearly every other post really gets annoying at times. Pet names for Democrats and RINOs may be funny the first time, but quickly get old. It's one thing to respect someone, and it's certainly acceptable to not do so for one reason or another, but it's never alright to be downright incivil.

Just the other day, I was in an argument here with some other members who were supporting Yanukovych over Yushchenko because Yush had pledged to remove Ukraine's 1600-some-odd-strong force from Iraq and was *gasp* more liberal than Yanukovych. Seriously, that's absurd. I'd be happy to debate with you here, but anyone can tell you Yushchenko as president will be much better for the Ukrainian people, our interests in Iraq be damned.

But I'm getting away from the subject at hand. These are just a few examples of the devolution of discourse here. While everyone is certainly allowed to have their own opinions, there is a certain level of civility that should be maintained, regardless of the context.

This is the sort of stuff you find at DU, not here. I recognize there's plenty of good, civil users here, and I'm thankful for that. To those guilty, though, it would be nice if you could tone it down a bit.

I love being here. Things like the Undead Thread, Daily Dose, and crushkerry's Lib Pundit tournament, along with the usual daily banter of normal news, makes FR like no other political site on the web. Let's keep it that way. Thanks for your time, and have a lovely day.

Post #432 - Posted by me:

And just what about the original post made him a "punk"?

Post #456 - your incredibly adult reply:

Well now, 'coops', anytime someone calls me a jackass in a thread concerning civility then I am dubious as to the intent and because his effeminate whining caused me to mistake his gender he automatically becomes a punk.

That said, your defense of his petulant failure to maintain a cool perspective classifies you as someone we pray will never be armed.

Now. Sit.

My reply #472:

Sit yourself.

While he may have been arrogant with some here, the original post is dead on. And where that arrogance is concerned, I can somewhat understand why you have that dynamic going with him. I entered this thread without reading the first several hundred posts.

From there it was little more than blustering/name-calling from your end.

It HAS been rectified; you are just a bigger "sanctimonious punk" than the boy you're railing against. You'll get no apology from me; don't delude yourself into thinking you deserve one. My original question was quite civil to you; your entire response to me was anything but.

Go beat your dog, or your kids - whatever you do for fun.

And next time, maybe wait a little longer until you are sure the person you're trying to get the last word in on is actually gone, genius.

"...our interests in Iraq be damned."

Lost me right there.

Look, you seem very nice and well-intentioned. I appreciate that......but nothing matters more to me than the interests of my country; nothing. Period. End of discussion. Your sentiments, again, are meant to suggest "civility", and I understand this.

However.............grow up. We're in a war on two fronts: terrorism around the globe, rampant liberalism at home. Get the stomach for the fight, son.

I don't fight fair. I'm tired of seeing libs dominate our culture with the assistance of a fawning media. I'm sick to death of their lies, cheating, and lack of anything resembling a moral center. I'm sick of their condescension, their dipping into my checkbook, their utter bullshit.

I was brought up military.......and I fight to win. I don't take prisoners, and I don't coddle the enemy. I despise my opponents. I hate liberalism and its proponents. I truly, utterly despise them.

You're a nice guy........but deal with it. BTW, I've been here for six years.

I don't know if you meant incivil as a typo. But, it seems to offer up the explanation I am looking for.

Uncivil would be if this were a forum for Dims (what I call the Rats) and conservatives. But it is not. This space is not for them. We are talking amoung ourselves. We are, to use your word, being "incivil."

"IMO...would do well" is no instruction nor command - just advice

the Judgement (that there have been CREVO threads with greater civility) seems to me quite just.

I *do* have a dog in this fight - this kind of thing can easily flare out of proportion, things can be said that can never be unsaid, and hostilities become entrenched like unto those of the Balkans.

Many of the participants on both sides of this fracas are on the One Ping, and this could lead to a sundering of that list.

This outcome I would prefer to prevent if I may.

It's one thing to fight the left, and hopefully accomplish something, it's another to simply throw insults at them, usually accomplishing nothing.

I see you are new so perhaps you don't get the point of this forum. It is for conservatives to talk among themselves. We could not possibly be throwing insults at them because they are not here. The few that straggle in often get booted.

You are 'emoting' a tad, IMO.

Carving up ping lists because of THIS?

If I was to complain about every time I'd been pissed off by singular post I'd been pinged to by multiple-ping lists....well....

Not a good excuse, Prout.

Response: here

I support the war fully and would never say or do or even think of doing anything to harm our soldiers or our efforts over there.

However, that Yushchenko will pull Ukraine's *massive* 1600-troop force out of Iraq does not seem to me to be a viable reason to support his sleazy, corrupt, even evil opponent.

and here

I'm sorry if that bit seemed harsh (in retrospect, it probably was), but as I noted a little back, I fully support our efforts and soldiers in Iraq, but do not see Yushchenko's promised withdrawal of Ukrainian support as a viable reason to support Yanukovich.

I apologize if my comment was unnecessarily harsh (which it was) and if I ruffled any feathers (which I did). I would never want any harm to come to our interests in Iraq - it was entirely about context - Yushchenko pulling out Ukraine's small force would have no effect either way, and thus did not seem to me to be a sufficient excuse for supporting his lying, cheating opponent. I meant it in no other regard, and again I apologize if it was taken that way.

Agreed, and yes "incivil" was a typo. Since my post was, in full, dashed-off tripe, I think I'm allowed one missed word. ;-)

Entirely true that this is not a site for liberals, and liberals are not welcome here, but I cannot count the number of times I've been at other political sites, arguing with a liberal, and get hit with the "loonies at Free Republic" retort. With some of the stuff being flung around here, the point is indefensible. As I noted upthread, we needn't give them any more ammunition, and how hard would it really be to tone down the shrillness a bit?

Usage allowed, BUT only for DFU parody songs.

Regular, everyday use of the derogatory term is strictly forbidden by K1avg statutes.

^^ all sarcasm ^^
