Why eating popcorn is good for your health

Popcorn could help prevent cancer, research suggests.

Scientists discovered the snack food contains 'surprisingly large' levels of health-boosting antioxidants called polyphenols.

Polyphenols in fruit and vegetables are thought to help reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer and other diseases.

The U.S. study was led by the chemist Dr Vinson from the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania. It is the first to establish that snack foods and some wholegrain breakfast cereals are a good source of polyphenols.

He said: 'We really were surprised by the levels of polyphenols we found in popcorn. I guess its because it's not processed. You get all the wonderful ingredients of the corn undiluted and protected by the skin. In my opinion it's a good health food.'

The study measured polyphenol concentration in breakfast cereals and snacks, showing there are more antioxidants in less processed wholegrain cereals, while popcorn has the most among the snack foods tested.

Hot breakfast foods such as porridge oats had disappointingly low levels of polyphenols, said Dr Vinson.

The research supports the idea that is the polyphenols in whole grains, rather than their fibre content, that makes them healthy.

Dr Vinson, who presented his findings to the American Chemical Society in Washington last night, added: 'Wholegrain products have comparable antioxidants per gram to fruits and vegetables.'

That wasn’t truly real butter on popcorn in movie theaters was it?

My kids’ friends think I am the strangest parent in the world because I cook my popcorn on the stove. But they don’t argue with the taste which is, imo, superior to the microwave variety!

Hear hear! I buy a bag of plain kernels and then pop 'em with a dab of oil on the stove. It doesn't take long to make TONS of popcorn, they don't scorch, fewer unpopped kernels, and there's no crap in it whatsoever.

I never make 'em in the microwave anymore. It's convenient, yeah, but a waste of money and they aren't as good.

You can lose a TON of weight with coconut oil! But you have to keep your overall diet low carb, and sadly, popcorn doesn’t fit in a low carb diet on a regular basis. It breaks my heart - popcorn is my favorite food.

Dill pickles go surprisingly well with popcorn.

A lot of people posting on Atkins threads a while back said they found they could take one day a week “off” and still lose . . .

That’s true. It’s just hard to get back in the swing of things...at least it is for my dad (I’m helping him drop a few lbs with Atkins) if you go off plan weekly. And me? I could eat popcorn 3 meals a day for a month and not be sick of it. But with tons of butter and salt. Baaad!

What's the latest verdict on coconut oil, anyone know?

It depends on whether the coconut oil has been processed (e.g. hydrogenated). Natural or virgin coconut oil is a whole lot better than processed or hydrogenated.

Hehe..I cook popcorn on the stove , too . Just got myself an 8 pound container of Orville Redenbacher’s Original here in Japan . I pop it in olive oil and sprinkle a little salt on top - no butter or margarine . This is the way my daughter and wife eat it as well . Even healthier !
