SOUTH BEND, Ind.- An ex-University of Notre Dame catering employee has agreed to pay the Indiana school back for half of a $30,000 tip mistakenly deposited in her bank account.

Sara Gaspar, who received a $29,387 deposit in her bank account due to an April 17 error for a deposit that should have been $29.87, said she spent the money on bills and a new car, the South Bend (Ind.) Tribune reported Friday.

Gasper agreed to pay the university back $16,859.79, about half of the original sum, in $50 monthly payments for about 28 years, court documents said. As part of the deal, the school agreed to drop its pending lawsuit to get the full sum back.

I see something interesting in this photo. Look at the girl in the front row, just to left of the flag on the PopeMobile’s right fender. She looks like she's a Muslim, head scarf and all. Why would a Muslim, assuming she is one, be smiling and hollering at the Pope?

I’d like to know who left the tip. And just what the catering provided.

Hope she remembers to declare the money as income wit the IRS.

I'm sure Notre Dame will remember on her behalf. Not that it matters much, but I'll bet she'll still be screaming about not getting her "refund" this year.

Sometimes it sucks to be principled, huh?

Is it that principled to not commit a crime, for which you will almost certainly get caught?

If you knew that you would get away with it or it was not a crime to steal someone else's money and you didn't do it anyway, then principles are at work.

“She looks like she’s a Muslim, head scarf and all.”

I think that is just what kids today call a “hoodie”, a sweatshirt or jacket with a hood.

Could be. But then I look at the way she's dressed overall. You're probably correct, but it just aroused my curiosity!

Also, did you notice the window on the left side of the vehicle is not full closed? Looks like it's down about halfway. What's the purpose of having a very unique, and expensive, Mercedez Benz PopeMobile if you're going to leave a would-be assassin a clear shot through a window?

I’d want to make friends with the guy that can keep $85K in his “checking” account !!!

The real paradox in the picture is that everyone of the spectators is dressed for cold weather (sweaters, jackets, etc.). Explains the hooded sweatshirt. However, the two cops at the right of the pic are dressed in shorts.

The young lady in question is the only one I see with her head covered. I also thought the remainder of her manor of dressing looked like the Muslim women I see around town.

Maybe she’s yelling something like “Death to the Pope, the old fart!”

If memory serves, muslim women aren’t allowed out alone. Don’t see any handlers (males relatives, etc.) around her. Also muslim women aren’t allowed to express themselves that openly. I just think she’s cold.

Still doesn’t explain the two cops in shorts !!!

Alas, I have never been so tempted or so tested by any financial institution -- not so much as a loose door on an armored car ahead of me in traffic.

That response was to a good friend of mine (Rocco) with whom I havw worked overseas. It was just a little dig at him. :)

He is a principled guy, BTW.

Just thinking of my own experiences.

Three times this year, I've gotten home from W-M grocery shopping, to find that the cashier failed to charge me for the case of Diet Coke underneath the basket, even after I have pointed out to her that it is there.

Three times this year I have clipped the upc from the case and on my next trip to W-M, I go to the service center, tell them what happened and have them ring it up and I pay for it.

It is embarrassing to me to hear them gush about my "honesty" in the matter, when it should be the normal reaction of people. It would not occur to me to do otherwise.

My credit union, with about 150 million in assets, once credited my 300 dollar deposit as 300,000,000.

I had $100 in my account before the deposit. It’s not often you check your account balance by telephone and get told, “Your account and available balance is THREE HUNDRED MILLION, ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS.”

When I went to the bank, I told the manager that he could have his money back, I just wanted the 1% checking interest for the 24 hrs the money was in my account.

His un-humorous response: it was never “really” there.

Lighten up dude, it’s not like a made a withdrawal. . .

I see Muslim women all the time here in Tampa that are not accompanied by a man. I think that rule is mostly in countries where Islam is the prevalent religion. The Pope would hardly be touring a country where Islam is the main religion.

She just looks so much like the Muslim women I see here in the Sunshine State. Also, no other woman has her head covered that I can see.

Nothing like a good mystery or riddle to pass the time! Thanks.

In some situations, yes it does! This wasn't one of them though. But man, when I think back on the number of times taking a principled stand has cost me financially or in terms of career advancement, I would strongly agree with you. Like they say, "No good deed goes unpunished. . . "

Then again, at least I can live with my self.
