WASHINGTON — A massive, eruptive white dwarf star in the Milky Way — long overdue for its next periodic eruption — is closer to our solar system than previously thought and could threaten the Earth if it fully explodes millions of years from now.

Does Al Gore know about this? He’ll predict an explosion in 10 years - unless we cough up big bucks.

“.....could threaten the Earth if it fully explodes millions of years from now.”

Perhaps I will be accused of procrastination, but I’m not going to put this high on my “worry list”. ;>)

I am reminded, He promised to never flood the earth again.

Now, I do find it amazing that we have reached a point that we can discover or even contemplate such things.

Couldn’t it have actually possibly already exploded — say 3,259 years ago? We just haven’t been able tto see it yet.

Just thinking maybe we ain’t all that super safe due to the distance.

How’d we know?

Contradictory statements. May not be millions of years from now - could be any day.

What cracks me up is how people just don’t get it...LOL. There is very little we can do to protect ourselves in the very rough neighborhood that we live in.

There are an unlimited amount of things that could happen to the earth even in the next 1,000 years that we have absolutely no control over.

Man is so arrogant!

One need only look at January 20, 2009 for a perfect example.

But what if it exploded 3258 years ago (and the Aztecs saw it).

On a well constructed Karnaugh map ... this would be the equivalent of a "dc".

How could a star explode more than once?

Sounds like a question for Dr. Michio Kaku to answer.

Then again, it could already have exploded, since it would take 3,000 light years to get here.

On the other hand the article suggests this could happen 10 million years from now. Since the average species lives about 5 million years. Who knows what we will have become by then if we don’t off ourselves with nuclear winter or some such before then. I think I will worry about something else for now.

Not contradictory, they were referring to a nova occurring about every 20 years that is now overdue. It is the SUPERnova that they are worried about and predict for 10 million years from now, or sooner?
