When I was a little kid the Wizard of Oz used to scare the cr@p out of me. Witches, flying monkeys, houses flying through tornados.

and although it’s an old movie, I really found the original Frankenstein, and the sequels by James Whale, to be pretty scary and still do.

“Suspiria” is hands down the scariest movie ever——truly terrifying. From the first scene to the last, the Day-Glo colors, the actors, the story, the score, all combine for mega-chills.
Also scary:
“Motel Hell” w/ Rory Calhoun. A gory horror/semi-comedy.
“I Bury the Living”-—nice dark chiller about cemetery manager (Richard Boone) who sticks pins into a map of the graveyard with the expected results.

Evil Dead 2? I thought that Evil Dead was pretty good, but Evil Dead 2 was laugh-out loud laughable.

Where is "Poltergeist?"
Also, the "Exorcist" and "Halloween" are under-rated on this list.

The Haunting - Julie Harris 1963
I can’t believe anyone would make a list of the scariest movies and not include this one. No CGI, no gore, no slasher victims, just a great story, great cast, and a really good director.
To see how far movies have sunk in terms of scaring the audience sometime watch this masterpiece, and then attempt to watch its 1999 remake. This waste of celluloid was the reason the word “dreck” was created...

As a kid growing up in the 50s I can't remember a film that made me cover my eyes so many times. The sounds and the lighting were just great.Same here, and Invaders from Mars scared the heck out of me too. Kept me looking out at the fence in our backyard for years.

If you haven’t seen The Uninvited, you owe it to yourself to do so. It too is well directed, and well acted. Ray Milland when he was still a great actor (before the Beast With Two Brains with him and Rosie Greer).:)
