Austrian authorities reveal find of buried treasure

VIENNA – A man turning dirt in his back yard stumbled onto buried treasure — hundreds of pieces of centuries-old jewelry and other precious objects that Austrian authorities described Friday as a fairy-tale find.

Austria's department in charge of national antiquities said the trove consists of more than 200 rings, brooches, ornate belt buckles, gold-plated silver plates and other pieces or fragments, many encrusted with pearls, fossilized coral and other ornaments. It says the objects are about 650 years old and are being evaluated for their provenance and worth.

All we found from tilling the new garden last month was that the remodeling contractor had buried the old bathroom instead of hauling it off to the dump.

It is a pity there are only those two pictures of the all the treasure.

I watched this builder dig a big pit and put in a large amount of material. They made the house nice and the owner moved in. One day it started raining and the pit filled up. The nice brick wall then started moving to the right. Not a drain hole in the entire wall.

I can't even dig in part of my back yard - the house we're in didn't even have municipal sewage until twenty years ago, and I have two septic tanks buried back there. What's inside ain't buried treasure, unless someone lost a wedding ring.
