Great news: Most annoying character on “The Walking Dead” now dead

I made the title of the post ambiguous in case any readers Tivo’d it and haven’t watched yet, but c’mon. We all know who I’m talking about. Realistically, it could only be one of two people: Either Sophia’s mopey mom, whose name I still don’t know, or that endlessly whining bleeding heart Dale. (Alas, the screencap AMC chose for the clip embedded below gives it away.) Now that some of the dead weight is being shed, I take it poor underused T-Dog is next. Or maybe Herschel’s other daughter, who tried to kill herself a few episodes ago? As with Sophia, until that plotline unspooled, I had no idea that character even existed. I wonder which barely-there member of the ensemble will be next to be suddenly thrust to center stage in the expectation that anyone watching cares a whit about them.

Incidentally, the kill scene here is dumb on several levels. How did Dale not hear it coming in the still of the night? These things growl constantly every time they’re onscreen, which isn’t often. How did the zombie disembowel him with his bare hands? (Admittedly, that’s happened in Romero movies too.) Tacking it on at the end right after the big dramatic climax with the prisoner made it feel random and haphazard, a zombie ex machina to get rid of the character before people start tuning out in sheer irritation at his do-good-ism. Then again, all’s well that ends well — and this certainly ended well. And in fairness, they did a brilliant job with the scene of Rick’s son tossing rocks at the zombie stuck in the mud. For all the grating soap-opera melodrama, there are sporadic flashes of genius in how the show captures the pathos of the zombies’ predicament. The scene of that zombie snarling from the end of a noose was the best thing about the first half of this season. Having little Carl amuse himself by humiliating a zombie who’s helpless in front of him was a more affecting moment of dehumanization than the entire Shane storyline. More of that and fewer weepy “here’s mah pappy’s timepiece” exchanges between Glenn and Herschel, please.

I’ve had a hard time supporting Shane, but he’s always been right, Rick just gets his people killed.

A moral society is a luxury that rule .308 underwrites, but it doesn’t plan for walkers. I wish Andrea and Daryl and Maggie and Glenn and everyone else could bust out and go Adam and Eve somewhere safe, like a cruise ship anchored off a OBX island.

He DID betray the entire cast last night, you didn’t watch it?

I only watched the first half hour, I'll finish it tonight

Rick killed Shane with a knife, then turned his back on him as Carl ran up

Whoa! I gotta watch the rest tonight.....

Much like Lost did, a great joy of this show is that they kill off really annoying main characters.

The humans on this show got so irritating for a while, I was rooting for the zombies to kill them all.

Now with Dale and Shane (the ying and yang of the show's douchebaggery) both dead, maybe I'll go back to the good side.

And T-Dog got a line last night. Go T-Dog, it's your birthday.

And they've always got to 'get somewhere'. [...]

What galls me about this series is that they're tooling around in crappy high mileaqe vehicles like that lousy motor home and old Chevy farm trucks from the '60s -- yet they've passed up perfectly good Stryker/LAV-25 AFVs and HMMWVs just sitting around.

How about this. Create a large wire excercise wheel like in a gerbil cage, and attach it to your trailer hitch. When you capture zombies, lock them in the gerbil wheel. As long at you sit in the driver's seat, they will try to come get you, pushing the gerbil wheel and pushing the car forward. Its a zombie powered car.

A grocery store is probably the first place that gets looted when society breaks down. Locking up there wouldn’t do you any good.

Well, that's a good point. I'd hope that not everywhere would get looted. Or maybe I'll just plan to be the first to loot and carry enough home to survive at home for a while.

But the main point is that in almost every zombie movie, the main characters are safe for a while in the middle of the movie somewhere where the zombies can't get them, and then they just have to go and mess things up and leave, or call attention to themselves.

My single mission in this world would be to get to a nice island, make sure all the walkers are dead on it and then live the good life.

They don't think, they don't swim, they just grunt.

Somewhere nice, with a few WalMarts and Costcos, for years worth of food. Key West maybe.

Hot chicks welcome.

Certainly. It really bothers me that everybody (characters and viewers) supports the execution of the kid from the other group.

You're looking at it from a real world perspective.

I hate Dale because I'm evaluating his value to the television show I'm watching. Every minute he spent pontificating on some "we're not any different!" whine was television time away from battles with zombies. I don't tune into zombie movies for philosophical navel-gazing.

I don't care if he was right or wrong or somewhere in between. He was a nuclear buzzkill for the show's pacing. I'm glad he got ate.

Geez....let me get this straight. The whiny libtard not only gets zombinied, he gets a .357 round in the brain....and everybody here is complaining?

Well. Here's AMC's TWD: This Southern belle is our Walker of the Week! A walker you could really take home to mom. Be sure to share her proudly with your friends.

Lori so has it coming.

I don't look at it the same way. We have murderous thugs in society today, we had them long before the rule of law was ever established and we will have them after the rule of law disintegrates. But society is the biological imperative not the breakdown of society.

Shane hurt his [not really] woman and his [potentially] children by his own dangerous actions. Instead of two guns pointing out from the camp there is now one. The good team beats the all-star ball hog. A lot of people here seem to try to manufacture some sort of conservative vs liberal dichotomy from the show labeling Dale as a gun-grabbing liberal when he was seen with a gun in his hand throughout the whole series. Dale was for the rule of law over the rule of the man with the biggest gun. Shane's world can be seen in practically every failed 3rd world country around the world and throughout history.

Rick's world is the only one worth while surviving in.

The character had zero credibility from the beginning. When I first saw that caricature at the start of the show I thought, “Wow.. That old-timer sure has quite a mouthful of perfect, very expensive, Hollywood teeth.” And he sure did smile a lot. Good riddance.

Nice....you could create all kinds of power generators with this method. You basically have a free/unlimited energy supply.

OK, I watched the second half last night and was glad to see Shane get it in the head.

Now, I've questions. If they're all carrying the virus that turns them into walkers once they die, then wouldn't that sorta make them immune to zombie bites unless the zombie actually killed them first?
