I've accidental killed a couple of Red Ant colonies while battling Fire Ants.
*Gotta save the Red Ants for the Texas Horny Toad.
The only thing I can really add to this concept is, some years ago whilst bored and waiting for something else to happen, managed to totally mess up the progress of a leaf cutter colony by erasing with my boot the pheromone trails on the ground. Ants and bits of tree everywhere. No telepathic links solved that one. Shame really.
My thinking is, the use of a central controlling program that all ants contain, but is supervised by the needs of the colony and queen. (personal concept ,not science)
Ear phones......Haa Haa..*snort*
Remember that ants have been around for an estimated 110 to 130 million years. More than 12,500 out of an estimated total of 22,000 species have been classified.
Ants have, over time, developed incredibly complex abilities, everything from using agriculture to grow food fungus, to ranching of aphids. Some ants raid other ant colonies to steal their eggs, which they raise as slaves.
Some ants, when flooded, cluster together in apple sized balls that float, with a slow rotation to give those at the bottom time on the top to breathe at intervals.
There are specialized fungi that attack ants and take control of their brains. The other ants can tell that an ant is infected, so will carry them far outside of their territory, lest the fungus spread to the entire colony.
Warning: David Attenborough horror movie.

“I bet someone here can name the Architect ”
I think it was Ant. E. Mologist.
Bump for later
Love the ant hill video, but I like the site itself even better. I wound up just hitting the ‘random video’ key over and over again. Tons of interesting stuff there.

:’) Thanks freedumb2003.
>>in another 500 years the ants may have street names posted.<<
And even in the ant world, any street named MLK will be filled with prostitutes, pimps and gangs.
