My dogs are Bowser (Bowsie) and Nina (Neener)

Both were already named when I got them but Neener was named Queenie and that had to stop immediately.

We almost named our cat ‘Cracker’. The kids were a bit young to explain it to them, so we didn’t.

The Naming Of Cats

-- T. S. Eliot

The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey--
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter--
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum-
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover--
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.

When I went to get my daughter a puppy I jokingly told my wife I was gonna name him "Hurley" because of the awesome character on Lost (who uttered the most awesome quote ever on a TV series!)

We picked up the dog at the Dog Pound (we believe in rescuing animals rather than buying from pet stores and the like) a little mixed breed Half Yellow Lab/Half Shepherd (what type of Shepherd we aren't sure)...

My mom drove and I held the puppy for his trip home in the car and he got a bit overexcited and promptly threw up on me. I told my wife and daughter and they laughed and said well it may have been a joke but it was karma so the name stuck! So "Hurley" is our resident clown and all around ball of excitement and a loving companion and we would be lost without him!

BTW "Hurley" has perfected the art of Building a "Pillow Fortress"...!

Pets don’t care what you name them. They know who they are and they love you for helping them live all their nine lives!

Or in the case of dogs, being available for loyalty and love!

A few years back, my brother was walking in the house carrying a 12-pack of beer. Somehow, he dropped the 12-pack and it landed squarely on the little kitten his kids had just adopted. The kitty was out like a light for awhile and they took it to a vet where it became alert and checked out okay. But, its name became...

12-Pack.

When I was a kid we had a black cat named Blackie. We also had a gray cat named....Gray. Not real imaginative, but the cats didn’t mind.

The cat curled up next to me is named Xani (pronounced Zany), which is short for Xanax. My daughter named him for the drug she thought he needed based on his behavior in his much younger days.
She allowed him to roam outside for a number of years and he would come home with a torn ear, missing teeth, and other assorted souveniers of his free days.
Then she married a man who is allergic and Xani came to live to live with us in his old age.He rarely tries to get out.

I see Fuzzy Lard Butt, Mr Smokers, Tkat, Spooky Momma, Jumpy Jibbles and Merkle Balls aren’t on the list. Just a few of our pets nicknames, mostly from my husband’s fevered brain.

I can scarcely think of two names more unusual than "Bob" and "Sherry."

And just give any excuse to post pics of my critters.
