VANITY: Recommendations on moving to Idaho or Montana... or elsewhere?
Third Person | November 10th, 2012 | Third Person

Hi FReepers...

For the last year, my wife and I have been giving serious consideration to moving our family out west.

We are born and raised New Englanders. We're a homeschooling family that enjoys outdoor mountain activities and also the arts and sciences.

We are looking for a conservative area [low taxes, less government, personal freedom, family friendly] and were wondering if anyone out there might have some recommendations. I have focused on Idaho and Montana, but am receptive to other suggestions.

I plan on making a trip out early next year to investigate... thanks in advance to all who reply!

Everyone needs to stand their ground. Unless you’re in a hellhole, and in that case if you haven’ t gotten out on your own yet, there might be no hopefor ya.

Stand your ground now. Know where you’ve drawn the line.

Great post!

I think that you might be missing one component though.

Some societal groups are builders and some are strictly takers. You might want to try to figure this fact into the calculations.

I AM in a hellhole...Red Hampshire. I’ll stand my ground when I get to my ground. :-)

Some people think that’s a negative, but given the idiocy prevalent on college campuses (campii?) that’s a plus in my book.

I looked at Idaho Falls a while back...wish I'd known that. That IS a major plus.

Surf’s up in Boise, Idaho!!! Come and enjoy the tropical climate where the temperature never gets above 78 degrees or below 65 degrees! It only rains at night when you’re asleep! As you get off the airplane, beautiful native girls greet you with a bowl of gopher goulash and the traditional Idaho greeting of “Tater!”. Explore the lush tropical jungle located just South of Boise! It is home to 75 species of parrots! Many lovely homes are available in the greater Boise area for under $100,000! Some even have new canvas! And there are Jobs! Jobs! Jobs! Potato pickers earn upwards of $50 an hour! And there’s nothing like slicing the top off a potato and taking a swig of the sweet, refreshing juice! All in all, Boise, Idaho provides a living experience that is the envy of......well.......Fresno. Tater!

I’ve traveled around a lot with the military, and I’d throw my lot with certain areas in NC, SC, Kentucky and Missouri. If you are looking to transplant, it’s nice to find an area near a military base where they are used to folks from elsewhere. That loosens up the reception, which in some more rural regions can be pretty cold if you don’t have old family ties. My favorite is Coastal NC, but I’m a storm freak. Knob Creek KY has a fantastic machine gun shoot. In Missouri they are so courteous that when you see one of those highway signs telling you to change lanes everyone does it as soon as they see the sign—not like where I live now, where everyone tries to get in front of everyone else. I grew up in the North, and I love it, but I also like being able to go out to the beach in Feb without a parka and snowshoes.

You’re right about the beauty and the weather, but everything else in CA sucks!

“I’ve looked at the Sandpoint area... any comments?”

Visit again in January, before making a final decision. Seriously.

I’m in CT, too. But even though it gets a little chilly in winter here, it’s nothing like the northern mountain states out west.

Have you considered West Virginia, or perhaps Kentucky?

No, Sandpoint does not have extreme temps (in summer or winter). Nothing like the other side of the Bitterroots. Many times I have come down from a day of skiing at Schweitzer Mountain and felt overheated in Sandpoint. Like ready for a swim in the unheated pool.

“There is no place in the nation to escape tyranny now.”

Your point is well taken, but let me offer this.

Consider the Titanic. After it struck the iceberg, it sank bow first, pulling the front of the ship downward as the stern rose high out of the water. Folks trying to stay alive fled to the stern, for it would clearly be the last place of safety.

Our nation is now in a similar situation. It’s taking on water, the bow is down, and reasonable minds sense the ship cannot be saved.

In this case, perhaps the best solution for those with the ability and wisdom to do so, would be to migrate away from the area that is (or soon will be) below the water, “to the nation’s stern” so to speak. Those who still believe in the old ways should re-congregate themselves into those areas of the country where they can keep tradition and values alive for the longest, regardless of what is happening elsewhere. There still are places where this remains possible, where survival (and I speak of the survival of values as much as of simple existence) may have a chance well into the future.

It may not be possible to create zones (even entire states) of refuge to the extent of Galt’s Gulch, but in the face of mass collapse in much of the country, at least some areas may have a far better chance than do others.

Have you ever read Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451”? The story closes with the renegade “fireman” leaving the city and journeying to a remote area where individuals have become “human books”, having committed entire books (which are banned elsewhere) to memory, and as they age, reciting and teaching the knowledge they have saved to the young, so that the books will “live” beyond themselves.

So, too, might these renegade areas of conservatism be maintained, to keep alive the concepts of freedom as the new Obammunist socialists try to stamp it out everywhere else.

I’m old, and perhaps may be gone before too many more years. But I’d like to find such a place of refuge, a place that more resembled the America of my youth than it does the America of today. Such locales exist — I’ve been to them. Got to pick up and move soon. I’m hoping I can find that place “on the stern” to have my own time run out before it, too, slips beneath the waves...

Check out central-western Maine near the NH border. Beautiful area. Low property taxes on the maine side & no sales tax on the NH side. A very 1950s vibe in the area. Of course it’s cold, but you can’t have it all:)

I have been looking at South Carolina for some time now. I like the weather, and beaches. Taxes are (relatively) low, politics look okay on balance (Lindsey Graham notwithstanding). Jim DeMint is excellent.

In Crook County Illinois now. Don’t want to leave family behind. Thinking about getting a small place in a neighboring county to stay close to family and another in southwest Missouri. When we moved here 20 years ago, it was a Republican area. Checked the election results from Tuesday and it generally went 65-35% Dem. We didn’t even have a Republican choice to vote for for the state senate and house. Time to move on....

Yeh-I can relate. I live a SE Mo. county that has a majority of that endangered species - the conservative Democrat. In local elections we don’t have Republicans for most of the offices. All the action takes place in the primary.

People here are pro life, pro guns, taxed enough already, except we are a poverty area and do have a lot of government dependents also.

Add in blue collar pro union segment. Teachers Unions by and large are non-existent in the rural areas. People still believe in local control of the school, but the largest school in the area is very dependant on Government dollars.

If not for my family, I would move back to SW Mo. in a hearbeat.
