Vanity: Looking for good TV/Cable TV dramas. Any suggestions?
me

A couple of weeks ago I was aimlessly changing channels when I came across CBS's "Vegas", a drama about the mob in Las Vegas in the early 1960's. It's a fantastic show, with a strong sense of right and wrong, and I didn't even know that the show existed.

So evidently not all of TV is either mindless reality or bland comedy. Any suggestions for other good TV dramas?

I like Vegas because it takes place in the 50’s. Brings back memories of my youth.

If you have kids older than 10, you can all watch “Heartland”. Usually on Wednesday nights on GMC or Inspiration channel. Set on a ranch in the Rockies. It is a modern day Waltons, featuring horses, Western living.

Another Western themed show is “Longmire”. Not great for kids but filmed in Wyoming. Great scenery and interesting plots.

No I think it's I just didn't like the show period. The stories or actor. Guess I like my spies just a little bit gritty and not so black and white.

"Longmire" ... filmed in Wyoming

The 'setting' of the storyline is Wyoming, but it is actually filmed in New Mexico.

We like Detective Dangerous on Netflix. Humorous crime solving.

I'm a big fan of "Castle," with Nathan Filion, of "Firefly" fame. Besides really loving the series, every now and then they have a little "homage" to Firefly, and it's really fun to catch them.

That's the only "TV Network" show I watch. I'm also a huge fan of Fringe, but it's winding down, since the current season is the final season.

I’ll add mad men and game of thrones

If you don’t want to subscribe to all the premium networks try hulu.com one of the pay per view options where you can mix and match

Perhaps someone here can say more about it

Yes, I think I'm going to be watching a lot of TV shows over the next four years if you catch my drift. But not on regular cable, I will either stream them over Netflix or rent out the DVDs. Can't see myself ever watching regular TV again - even NFL football games, I will DVR and skip through all the nonsense.

These are the series I have already lined up on Netflix:
Breaking Bad
Mad Men
Lost
Boardwalk Empire
X-Files
Sopranos

I'll also tack on some recommendations I see in this thread and I have stacks and stacks of books that need reading as well.

My only complaint about “Falling Skies” is that it seems they only do 6 or 7 episodes a season, and then they say, “See ya next year!”

ARGH!

They really need to revive the mini-series. It’s a great format. We watched the movie of “the Hunger Games” and I felt that so, so much was left out - I told hubby if we hadn’t listened to the audio book I wouldn’t have any idea of what was going on. But it could have made a great mini-series.

It appears “American horror story” is sort of doing that, but of course this year they’ve gone all anti-Catholic which is not only offensive, but trite. But I did like their idea of a completely new story-line.

I mostly watch old Film Noir movies at veetle.com. They also have a good war movies channel but with a limited playlist.

Veetle uses P2P file sharing technology in case that bothers you.

Give Lie to Me an episode or two on Netflix. Imagine a consultant that literally can tell if you are lying or not. Not only is it an interesting show but you learn a ton about non verbal communication.

Burn Notice, Elementary, Person of Interest, Major Crimes were previously suggested and I concur. I also second White Collar, Leverage and The Mentalist, Game of Thrones and Leverage.

As with any drama, it is always best to start at the beginning. Most of these are on Netflix and seeing them commercial free is a blessing.

Cheers,

Get rid of your liberal supporting cable television and read a book or use the Internet.

Yeah because handing money over to liberal Hollywood has really worked well for the conservative movement

The first season of Prison Break was excellent, the second was good and then it kinda ran out of steam. It is available on Netflix.
