'A copy of an unknown Robert the Bruce letter from the build-up to the Battle of Bannockburn has been discovered.
The letter, sent in 1310, asks English King Edward II to stop persecuting the Scots.
It shows Robert asserting his God-given authority as king of the Scots and addressing Edward as his equal.
The script, thought to have been transcribed from the original, was discovered by chance by a professor of Scottish history at Glasgow University.
Bruce's Scottish troops defeated the English army at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.
The new letter was found in a document which dates from about the turn of the 16th Century and has presented historians with fresh information about a pivotal time in the wars of Scottish independence.'

The Campbells never saw eye to eye with anyone, lol. And I am a Campbell myself.
by Robert Burns
Scots! wha hae wi' Wallace bled,
Scots! wham Bruce has aften led,
Welcome tae your gory bed,
Or tae victory!
Now's the day, and now's the hour;
See the front o' battle lour:
See approach proud Edward's power -
Chains and slaverie.
Wha will be a traitor knave?
Wha will fill a coward's grave?
Wha sae base as be a slave?
Let him turn and flee!
What for Scotland's king and law
Freedom's sword will strongly draw?
Freeman stand, or freeman fa'?
Let him on wi' me!
By oppression's woes and pains!
By your sons in servile chains!
We will drain our dearest veins,
But they shall be free!
Lay the proud usurpers low!
Tyrants fall in every foe!
Liberty's in every blow! -
Let us do or dee.
Robert the Bruce, my 21st great grandfather.
Hello, nice to meet you. I have met two different Campbell families during the course of my life. I have not met any Becketts until now. I do find my grandparents tales of peoples they traveled with and stayed away from during their lives interesting. Course I do not live where they lived most of their lives so I do not have interaction with the offspring of those they told tales about.
Actually there was enough family disagreements they did not need to go to far outside their own clans to have disputes. Strange to use that word, clan.
I think the same could be said about most of the Douglas and Menzies/Mings clan. Maybe they/we were/are all too much alike? Probably why so many of them left the old country.
What’s with all the havering on this thread?
I don’t know anything about clans, plaids, family coats of arms, etc. and who did what to whom in the 1300s, etc. I remember being told as a child that I “make a better door than window” when standing in front of something, LOL.
I DO know my ancestors were cleared off the highlands, expelled from Scotland and put on what were called “funeral boats” because so many died on the journey to America.
We have done VERY well in the U.S. And yes, I am VERY proud of my Scottish heritage.
I have no idea what my ancestry is. But I thank God and my forebears that I was born and raised in United States of America!
Clan Gordon, here.
