Sorry, China, But Native Americans Probably Aren't Hunanese
Foreign Policy ^ | Alicia P.Q. Wittmeyer

China's Global Times - that reliable purveyor of the sublimely ridiculous, the terrifyingly nationalistic, and the just generally offensive -- struck again on Wednesday, with a quick nine-paragrapher that may just manage to combine all three offerings in one: "American Indians descend from Hunan, says expert."

The tabloid reports on the findings of Du Gangjian, dean of Hunan University Law School, who, on a recent trip to study Native American tribes in the United States (the article doesn't specify which ones), made the discovery that "American Indians have many rituals, habits and working tools that are very similar to the ones that exist among Hunan people."

Don’t you have an irrigation ditch to divert this morning?

" . . . it’s not the American Indians who reject this - it’s their vocal, mostly white, ‘advocates’, who insist on the single origin Bering Strait story."

And it isn't only the insistence that makes me suspicious, it is the dogmatic rejection of anything else which even hints of slight deviation from their theory.

The grizzled old Sioux professor which I studied under first begin teaching back in the 1930s. He had lots of friends among students and professors in other departments, but none that he could name in the field of anthropology or the new field of Native American studies which was just getting started when I met him in the mid-1970s.

He never would have been hired had he started out then, even though political correctness was just beginning to take root.

It makes you wonder what the "profession" is trying to hide when they have to be so strictly dogmatic. Sort of like the global warming industrial complex . . .

Thanks! I'd be very interested in any further details which either could offer. While I have a lot of contacts in various Native American tribes, I've never heard of a Hopi/Piute connection.

Which is rather strange, when you think about it, given their historical geographic proximity.

Bingerthon in one paragraph

Can't live without corn and red potatoes. Really had a late start this year because of global warming. And on another note why should I really give a red potato regarding Nelson Mandella? And/or Paula Deen? And now Mr. dumb ass Hatch is showing his true colors...Anything else you want to talk about regarding China?

If they’re Floridians, they must be Gramma Rays.

That was a very pretty sight at your place.

The cool water flowing in the ditch, with the vegetation all around was unexpected!

See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.
