The Death of Star Wars
National Review ^ | November 25, 2013 | Betsy Woodruff

It must be said: In October 2012, Star Wars fans felt a great disturbance in the Force. Disney — no need to explain why this is gobsmackingly horrible — announced that it was going to insult the collective intelligence, sensibility, and good taste of everyone in America and the English-speaking world by welcoming George Lucas to the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and making another Star Wars trilogy. So obviously I tried out for it.

“When I first watched that movie the entire row in front of me got up and walked out 20 minutes into the film. It was one of the scariest flights I’ve ever been on!”

You just made me laugh on an otherwise miserable day. Thank you :-)!

“The Ewoks were basically a stupid idea.”

Lucas’ original concept was that the final battle with the Empire would take place on the Wookie planet, but he decided that Chewbacca was too technically advanced to make his point of primitive guerrilla warfare overcoming an advanced opponent. Ewok is basically Wookie with the syllables reversed.

Do you think is a Coincidence that the BEST Star Wars Move (The Empire Strikes Back) is the one that has the LEAST amount of Involvement from George Lucas?

Because I don't.

I recall reading many years ago that Lucas saw Star Wars as a trilogy trilogy, or 9 movies.

Yes absolutely. His original vision was to be 3 trilogies.

First the overthrow of the Empire.
Second, the Clone Wars and the origination of Darth Vader.
Third, the further adventures of Luke Skywalker and his friends.

Where he chickened out was on the last three. Even he saw there was no good way to do it and make money so he lied and said he only ever envisioned 6 films and bailed.

What an amazing thing that he was able to sell the rights to the final episodes...that he says never existed.

Star Wars purist? For crying out loud, Betsy! Motion pictures are made for profit. The studios have no such “purity”, they, like all the investors and hired hands, want to make their dollar as does anyone in business.

They should just go all out. New cartoons....

“Baby Star Wars”... Luke, Leah, Han as little tykes and their adventures together at day care.

“Tiny Droids” a child version of R2D2 and C3PO on their own silly quests.

“Tales from Yoda”... a cartoon series with Yoda narrating a variety of tales from across the Star Wars universe.

Star Wars should never have been made a series. When I saw Star Wars I in 1977, I thought at the time that it was the best movie ever made. None of the sequels came even close to measuring up to it.

When the series resumed in the 1990’s, I only saw the first film. It was so inferior to the original—and even the two sequels—that I refused to see any of the others.

Not that any of his ideas were original anyway. Imperial officers looking like the command staff of Rommel’s HQ. Stormtroopers jumping out of Hueys in a hot LZ. B-17s fighting off swarms of Focke-Wulfs. His movies were nothing more than special effects versions of a grab bag of combat film.

Yes, and it seems to me the plot was biblical. Set in the past, Darth Vader as Satan, the Force as the power of prayer, The Dark Side as Satan's evil power.

I'm not saying Lucas is pro-Christian, just that he took the bible and turned it into a sci-fi secular story.

The “finger in my throat” narcissism of this series is risculous.

Actually, I've never met anyone who thought Return of the Jedi was a good film, either in concept or execution.

The original Star Wars (sickeningly retconned into A New Hope) was a hodge-podge of material pilfered from classic science fiction of the 50's and 60's and the whole "Samurais in Space" concept stolen from Akira Kurosawa's Hidden Fortress. It happened in the right time and place, and ILM was genuinely technically innovative.

The magnum opus of the set is clearly The Empire Strikes Back, a noir film with which Lucas had virtually nothing to do. [His nasty divorce, thank God, kept him from meaningfully participating.]

So we get a menacing build-up to set the stage for what was originally supposed to be the intro to a second trilogy, (of three, one of which was to be a prequel.) We're presented with an overwhelmingly powerful, evil, supernatural enemy with the military might of an entire galaxy at its back and it's done in in a few hours by ...

... fuzzballs ...

WTF?! How can you do anything but shake your head over the rank stupidity and ultimate disrespect this shows your audience?

I find it sad that Lucas made his dreck before John Carter of Mars came out on film.

That was some original dreck!

Empire Strikes Back will always have a special place in my heart. I first saw it in German.

Darth Vader speaking German was the way it should be.

I thought Fargo was really funny until I found out they had simply lied when they said it was a true story. That was almost completely what made it entertaining, thinking it was true.
