State: Kentucky Plan: Platinum Premium: $239.63 Max Out of Pocket: $1,500 Deductible: $500
Why: She's pregnant and the total bill (Hospital+Midwife) will be around $8,000 presuming no complications. This is based on what the hospitals have told us. My sister-in-law just had a baby and they ended up paying over $9,000.
Total cost to us: 239.63*12+1500 = $4,375.56 Savings: $3624.44 (Or more.)

I am aware we need to watch out for the things that insurance doesn't cover however, having this insurance makes me feel monetarily less responsible. There have been several things that we have opted against because we felt they were not necessary, I.e a second ultrasound. Hey, if someone else is paying for it why not get it? We could potentially run up the bill by several thousand dollars if we wanted.
What if everyone did this? I have a feeling many more people will take advantage of the Obamacare rules as I am. IE buying insurance after my wife is pregnant knowing that I will save money.
Before you could buy insurance that covered pregnancy but (logically) it kicked in 9 or 10 months after you purchased you plan.
On one hand I feel guilty, I am shirking my responsibility and using the system at the cost of other tax payers. Under the old system I wouldn't feel this way because there was no clear way to take advantage of insurance. I would be paying for insurance at least 9 months before my wife got pregnant. Also I halfway feel I've sold out on my beliefs to save a few thousand dollars.
On the other hand I do not feel guilty because I pay a lot in taxes, and I will be paying a $1,000 fine at the end of the year for not buying insurance for myself. Obama and insurance companies knew people were going to be doing this (higher rates are partly due to this) and they may as well see the results of everyone taking advantage of the system at every turn.
This is no longer insurance. Unless I see a valid need or a monetary advantage for buying insurance next year my wife and I will pay the fine.
You mean as Obama has been doing? Yep! But if they do then I’m going to cancel my plan...whatever it takes to do that. I’m not going to pay for something that doesn’t benefit me.
Nope, not doing it. Obamao can kiss my white azz.
You’re behaving rationally. That’s what everyone will do and this is why the system is doomed.
Let’s say that you get diagnosed with diabetes next month. Of course you’ll buy insurance for yourself vs paying the fine.
Ultimately we all do what’s in our best interest. And we justify it with rationalizations. It’s called Human Nature.
Do you get a subsidy? Why would you buy obamacare if you don’t get a subsidy. Why not just get private insurance?
$9,000 for having a baby, wonder where those pregnant illegal aliens get that kind of money?
:) Excellent. I’ve always liked this one, too: “And I want to say one more thing, in the spirit of the Irish people..”

How did she get such low premiums and a $500 deductible?
You could pay 12 months at $240 = $2880. If you paid the fine you’ll only be $1,880 ahead. I’d pay the $1880 and be covered.
Hope you have LifeLock.
So that’s where my taxes are going.
ANYONE who does not currently have health insurance and is expecting to have medical expenses in 2014 that exceed the Obamacare premiums SHOULD buy an Obamacare policy for 2014. Anyone who has an Obamacare policy should run up as much medical expense as possible—it’s for the good of the Republic that we assist in its death spiral.
On the other hand, anyone who is healthy and not expected to have significant expenses, should not help out Obamacare by enrolling. Such acts of non-enrollment by the healthy and/or young also will help assist in Obamacare entering its death spiral quickly.
Obamacare running massive cost overruns in 2014 will insure that participating insurers will not make a profit plus will be REQUIRED to have substantial premium increases and/or coverage/benefit decreases in 2015. Those higher premiums and crappier coverage in 2015 will further promote the death spiral and hasten the death of the monstrosity of Obamacare.
You can only buy Obamacare insurance plans during the open enrollment period. This year, it ran from October through March. Next year (and going forward), it will run from October through December, with coverage beginning in January. So, let's say you get diagnosed with diabetes in January - you'd have to wait a full year for coverage to kick in.
You want to make sure that baby is covered. My new born granddaughter was in the hospital for a month because of an infection. The bill was out of sight. My daughter had insurance from work that covered everyone.
My thoughts EXACTLY!!
Sign up for the Christian health sharing ministries, avoid the fines, and not have a cent go to funding abortions or sex changes or other folks’ risky personal behaviors they will not give up.
As an aside, I hardly see Doug from Upland around here anymore.....he's one of the best! Merry Christmas to you!!
Merry Christmas to you too!
Is the $9000 the suggested list price, or what the hospital will actually gladly accept?
I had some tests at UPMC last year, the list price was $13k, they gladly accepted less than 2000 from the insurance company.
That’s the real question mark, the real problem with medical costs, the list prices are in fantasy land.
I have the bill from when I was born at Allegheny General, it cost my dad $154- they saved the receipt in case they wanted to bring me back (or so they said). There certainly has been a lot of inflation since 1956, but items that cost a buck and a half then aren’t $90 today
