The veterans involved were no better than the Occupy Wall Street crowd at that point. They were using the threat of force to try and extort money out of the American people through Congress.

"No better than the Occupy Wall Street crowd?"

What a hysterical exaggeration.

There have been several incidents in American history related to soldiers' compensation, going back to the Revolutionary War era. In many of these cases, the veterans' grievances had at least some legitimacy.

Not so with the OWS crowd.

Thank you, chicagolady for posting this. I have seen this before. We all need to make it available to others, even those who may not visit us on FR. I will so so. And yes, it can, it will happen again. We must be ready. We the people will not survive if we are not.

And note who was carrying out the presidents orders. Also not that MacArthur disobeyed Hoover’s orders about crossing the bridge just as he did later in Korea when he disobeyed Truman’s orders about crossing the river into China.

There were so many accounts of people starving in New York that the West African nation of Cameroon sent $3.77 in relief.

That would be $57.81 in todays dollars! Thank you Cameroon!

This would never happen these days. The government would simply print more money and pay them off in a heartbeat.

Africa’s been seeding Missionaries here for several years because they see us as ‘lost’ because we go into the womb of mothers and kill babies.

So, what part of President Hoover’s orders do you find objectionable?

Don’t get me wrong, Riot control is a long standing mission of the National Guard in the States and the Old Guard in DC. Also, Soldiers will put down rebellion (as was the case in the bonus marchers). The bonus marchers were evicted after 3 months of “Occupy Washington” style of protests that included attempts to coerce the Congress through violent confrontation. — The film here has a very left leaning agenda. Listen to how it talks about the need for a “new system” at the end. — I recall Patton had a very low opinion of them. He believed the marchers betrayed their status and were negligent in their demanding anything for their service.

I recognize the very complicated situation we have today. I, like many others, have no faith in the current administration to do the right thing with regard to the Constitution. But at the same time, having worked in the Federal Emergency Response Process while at the Pentagon, to include the response to the 9/11/2001 attacks, I responded a “truther” type argument which advocated firing on the troops for simply being present. THAT IS WRONG.

There is an appropriate role for the military in assisting Civil Authorities. That role is governed by Posse Comitatus and Constitutional restraints. I constantly worry about those lines being crossed by this government. But there are too many here arguing that any use of Federal Troops is somehow a call for armed confrontation by any one who owns a gun. Such arguments will get a lot of innocent people killed.

I could be wrong here, but as I recall: When FDR became President one of the first things he did was compensate WWI vets by sending many of them to Key West FL by train. Key West where, at the time, livin’ was easy, the sea bountiful, and food grew on trees.

When I was in Key West in the 70’s one could still see from the causeway the remains of the rails sticking straight up in the bays ... all that was left after the vet carrying train met the northern bound hurricane.

WWI vet problem solved.

Can you give a reference to the takeover of the demonstration by communists and agitators?

“Wrong! The veterans had largely dispersed and were replaced by communists and assorted rabble spoiling for a fight.”

The grandchildren of those communists now occupy every department in the Federal Government.

In the end, MacArthur’s exceeding the orders he received from the Commander-in-Chief resulted in a political and public relations problem for the Hoover

How did MacArthur exceed his orders if his orders stated that because the civil police were unable to maintain order that he was to "have United States troops proceed immediately to the scene of disorder. Cooperate fully with the District of Columbia police force which is now in charge. Surround the affected area and clear it without delay."?

this is another example of the government breaking its promises to its Veterans... then punishing the Veterans because they objected to the government’s breach of trust

If the bond wasn't redeemable until 1945, how did the government break its promise?

Can you give a reference to the takeover of the demonstration by communists and agitators?

Sure. For starters be sure to read post #89 on this thread. You should also read MacArthur's account on pp 92-97 here. Then head to a library and research newspaper articles from the period.
