The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

TEXOKIE:" They are saying I should set out even the treated seed potatoes in a shady area.
So I’m wondering should I even attempt the grocery store potato I have sprouting?"

Heck yeah , use your sprouted eyes, along with a 1 -2 inch square of the original potato .
The remaining chunk of potato will nourish the sprouted eye until it sends out roots and can be self-sustaining.
Remember that it is in the solanaceous family (tomato). Its all part of the learning process .

What do they use for treatment?
I don't recall as my information is out-dated. I believe it is some type of fungicide which may be available at garden stores .
Regardless whether you get the 'treatment' or not , grow those sprouts anyway .
Many other gardners have successfully raised 'untreated' potatos in straw or even compost heaps by accident.

I was just coming home from the store, and the wealthy people up the hill from me had put out a beautiful leather sectional, and a brand new/covered in the store plastic queen sized mattress and box springs.

I had to laugh as their throw away pile is better than my "good" stuff. If I would've had a strong man & a flatbed...

Congrats, you did good. Maybe tomorrow will bring more good news.

I am at break point on the WH job again. New one is up one the riser undamaged, old one out the door. I am tired, tired. All this after a day of hunnydoos yesterday. All that remains is to connect the water and gas lines and fire it up.

I forgot to mention yesterday that about 100 or so of my wife’s zennias popped up, about 500 or so more to come, hopefully.

We are starting to see some green one some of the ferns and other greenery in the front beds that were hard hit by the ice storm. On her containers out back, only green coming back on about 15-20% of them. We are not going to throw anything out for a few months, My meyers lemon took almost 1 1/2 years before life came up from the dead plant.

I haven't had running hot water for over 7 years. I don't see replacing the hot water heater any time soon. ;)

I laid down for a minute after doing all the work in the garden. Just a minute or two, mind you. Almost 2 hours ago. WTH happened?

We got the water heater finished, thank you
Lord for small favors. Fortunately, all the critical connections were same locations as the old unit(I love standardization on critical installs). A little cleanup with the wire brush, soapy water check on the gas lines and we are good to go. Now that old one; I will cut it up in such a way as to create that burn pit I have been wanting; and remove the gas burner and I will be able to build an outdoor cooker for shrimp boils and frying turkeys.

I fell asleep and died last night, never even feeling my lower backache that has keep me sleeping in the recliner for 2 night. I don’t think I moved all night, I was wore out from the outside work. I hadn’t even recovered today when I started this WH project about noon. Tonight, I die! I am sore all over from being mashed, keeping from being mashed more. I took my cell phone out there and told my wife it was on the toolbox, just in case we need 911 to get a water heater off of me. All the while, I am not connected to my O2 line, so I’m breathing like a rode hard race horse.

It is good and morally laudatory to recycle stuff like that.

Lot of fun, too. For some folks. Like me.

I’m not really a recycler, I just like FREE stuff. Pallets are cool, too, lots of FREE oak. I am looking at that 3yo stack of oak firewood out back. I think I will saw some of it into planks and machine them into usable 20” pieces of wood for small projects like trinket boxes, clocks, etc..

I had an opportunity to cut down some Osage Orange trees. They are pretty common up near Sulfur Springs. Those trees are also called bois d'arc. I turned some tools, including some mallets out of that wood, and the older wood, I had to turn on the machine lathe, with machine tooling. The wood lathe and sharp gouges didn't do much to it.

Talk about some tough wood for tool use... I'd love to get some more. That wood was used for wagon bearings back in the day.

We had a few grapes on one plant last year. They’ve been in the ground since 2008. It doesn’t produce well, and what does develop is quickly eaten by birds.

Most of these are annual flowers that Lady Bender has seeded a couple of days ago…

That’s so nice. On Christmas day, Hubby told me he didn’t know what to get me, so he wanted me to tell him what I wanted and he would get it.

I ways thinking about getting the judge public defender which uses 410 or 45 long ammo. I have bought myself a rake and a shovel every year since 2010. He loses his and then borrows mine. So maybe I should have him buy me a rake, leaf rake, and a shovel instead.LOL

I am hoping our blueberries made it. Hard to tell. It’s still early days.

Hubby covered the strawberries a bit too heavy with the straw, and then didn’t take it off as soon as he intended, so the strawberries aren’t looking to good. We may not get much in the way of berries this year.

I hit the bed and died for 9 1/2 hours nonstop, never once got up. That is a record for me, I think. My wife overslept by 30 minutes, so that started her day off wrong.

Even the puppy was tired from being out there with us and being on the dog run, she was not too happy about getting up this morning.

I made a bit of progress over the weekend. Cleaned out and re-mulched the asparagus bed, cleaned out some of Mrs. Augie’s flowerbeds, hauled home another trailer load of horse poo and mulched most of my orchard trees. Still have half a trailer load of poo to unload on the garden so I’ll have something to do in the evenings this week after I get home from work.
