No respect: Navy is the least prestigious military branch in the eyes of Americans
The Washington Times ^ | 05/23/2014 | S.A. Miller

Americans say the U.S. Army is the most important service branch to national defense, but the Marine Corps is still considered the most prestigious, said a Gallup poll released Friday.

The annual poll, timed to mark the start of the long Memorial Day weekend, showed that 26 percent of Americans say the Army is the most important military branch, followed closely by the Air Force at 23 percent. The Marine Corp was called the most important by 19 percent, the Navy by 17 percent and the Coast Guard by 3 percent, the poll found.

In time of war, the USCG has been seconded to the DoD, but I don’t know how the DHS assimilation affects that.

People probably think the SeALs are Army and Top Gun as he Air Force. And the CBs must be Halliburton.

“The United States Marine Corps is part of the United States Department of the Navy........”

.......The MEN’s Department!

As a former gator sailor, I’ve heard them all.

Still not military. Not disparaging the work Coasties do, got a few friends still serving, but the original poll was military. USCG has got the record for longest length of unbroken service and they have put themselves in harms way numerous times.

Still not military.

I need to correct myself. According to Title 10 & 14 they are considered part of the Uniformed Services. Mea culpa.

Naval bases are generally located in much nicer places than Army bases. About the only state side Army base that is located in a beautiful part of the country is Ft. Lewis in Tacoma, WA.

Ft Campbell, Kentucky. Nice area to live & nice area to hunt.

The Marines work at it, for instance look at the Windtalkers, the Indian radio men, to the public that is all about the Marine Corps, instead of the Army, or the “Devil Dogs” of WWI myth, the Marine Corps has always been heavy on promotion.

I think there might be and exception made for bubbleheads. They’re generally considered something of a breed apart from regular sailors.

Let's hope social engineering won't dumb-down our branches of the military:

More than half of female Marines in boot camp can't do three pullups, the minimum standard that was supposed to take effect with the new year, prompting the Marine Corps to delay the requirement, part of the process of equalizing physical standards to integrate women into combat jobs.

“Coast Guard ain’t military.”

My point exactly, but they were included in the story as if they were. Which still makes S.A. Miller a moron because apparently HE thinks they are.

They are and they aren’t. They are more like a wartime reserve component; a civilian force that is activated and switches roles from civil duties to military duties when activated during wartime. They have the same military ranks, privileges, etc as any of the regular military services. They are not part of the four active/reserve warfighting military services so the swabbies are still the least respected with the exception of their Navy Seals component.

Disagree. They pull some awfully serious missions which fall between the military and law enforcement. Anybody else want to operate in that grey area during the Obama administration? Two words: Mona Passage.

USCG has earned my respect. Second only to USMC doing way more than their budget suggests. And I say that as an Army veteran. Kudos to USCG. They eat the crap sandwiches the careerist officers atop the four branches of the military throw overboard. Damn fine people. Hackworth would approve.
