Straight razor shaving...
Chasaway

Posted on 06/26/2014 12:28:00 PM PDT by Chasaway

I need some straight razor advice, from some straight razor veterans. I've been shaving with a safety razor, mug and brush for 12 years. I've moved to a shavette straight razor in the last 3 months.

It seems to me that moving to a pure straight razor will mean sending razors off to be honed 3-4 times per year @ around $30 per pop.

Besides the "romance" and general badass-ness of using a true straight razor, what would be the advantages/disadvantages of moving to a pure straight razor/throat cutter?

Don’t bother. Sign up with the Dollar Shave Club. It’s a great deal.

I spend about 20.00 for 3 years.

And I think about the shave as an experience, rather than a chore.

Same with my showers.

Like the folks say: Life is too short to take lousy showers.

If I gotta do it, I figger I’ll do it fun.

“...And PLEASE... we’re begging... don’t do crap to your body hair beyond a slight trim. There is NOTHING more disgusting than stubble on a man’s back...”

LOL!!

I can barely reach all the places on my face...much less my back!

And I need to reiterate...I’m not doing this for anyone but me. No one complains; no one mentions my “stubble”.

I just enjoy being “clean-shaven”.

you can extend cartridge blade life by drying them after shaving. water rusts and dulls the edge. i shake the razor, then do several strokes across my towel to dry the blades. you’ll get more life out of them, lots depending on how you personally shave.

Back when safety razors were made entirely of metal, there used to be covered mugs with notched lids. My dad used one to store his razor with the blade immersed in a Barbisol-like liquid. Modern multi-blade razors might not take the soaking as well - too much plastic.

If you weren’t supposed to have hair on your face it wouldn’t grow there. Leave them whiskers alone and save time and money.

Do you know the cave they entered into was actually SITTING BULL FALLS outside of Carlsbad NM?

And the skeleton rock formation is at a different cave in Carlsbad Caverns NP.

Heh.

For 30 years I had a full beard. Now it’s only mustache and chin.

And I guess that same philosophy works for the stuff that grows on your teeth if you don’t brush, your ear hair, your nose hair, etc., right?

What?

Say that again.

Are you telling me that those scenes were filmed in NM?

And I can go there?!!

Funny.

And I’m sure that when there are 20 blades on the thing they’ll offer financing

I figure when they get past 6 it will change to a wall mount and we will just rub our faces on them.

lol!

My (adult) daughter and I just had a gagging, fall-on-the-floor episode imagining chest stubble against our ‘tender mounds’... (edited for FR... yes, I mean mammary glands.)

uh! Just... uh! Gross!!!

We’d rather have nice, thick, soft fur.

This will make you feel cool.

http://www.vintagestraightrazor.com/products/alex-jacques-custom-7-8-razor-with-ring-and-blue-g10-scales.html

However it will require the same effort to keep this thingy sharp as it would for a $50 straight razor.

I shave about 4-6 times a year with electric sheep shears, so I cannot speak to what you are doing... But I can say it is relatively easy to learn how to sharpen a razor or a knife, though the strop takes a knack - It is a skill that cannot serve you poorly.
