Freepers know just about evrything, so I’m hoping you can help me figure out a crazy movie I saw a number of years ago. Don’t remember much of the plot, just that it was weird. The recurring thing is a Patsy Cline song, ala a broken record. The name of the town was a very short four or five letter name, a town I’d never heard of. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

Definitely.

The first RoboCop and the original (Romero’s?) Night of the Living Dead were both filmed in Dallas. NOT saying they would make top 25, but NOTLD was pretty scary for its time. Two low budget b/w movies were also made around the Lake Dallas area (now Lake Lewisville); one with packs of dogs wearing shaggy costumes and sporting long teeth (I can’t recall the name).

Indian Paint, with Johnny Crawford as an Indian boy and Rory Calhoun, was filmed around the Mountain Creek area of Dallas. I was the apartment manager of a large complex when the owner allowed the Director and several others doing the film, Rory Calhoun, etc., to live in some of the apartments FREE while they were shooting the film. .....Calhoun was a full blown alcoholic and was drunk 24/7, so it was difficult to get him to do his scenes right.

I loved Romero’s original Night of the Living Dead.

Of course, I saw it way back in college with a GORGEOUS date, so....

I was waiting for a Fandango mention. I wasn't sure if it was in Texas or New Mexico. Fine movie.

I also think Hud, Loving Molly, Nadine, Duel in the Sun, Sugarland Express, Home From the Hill, Old Yeller, and Terms of Endearment should be in the mix.

The writers’ list is too biased toward newer movies, maybe because of their relative youth and inexperience.

.

Don’t miss the oft forgotten movie, ‘Tender Mercies’ (1983) staring Robert Duval.

Won 2 oscars

A broken-down, middle-aged country singer gets a new wife, reaches out to his long-lost daughter, and tries to put his troubled life back together.

It’s almost worth the whole thing to hear Betty Buckly sing the Oscar nominated,’Over You’.

Writer: Horton Foote

Stars: Robert Duvall, Tess Harper, Betty Buckley

.

Texas over the many years has had a lot of films to be proud of. One interesting thing
I find in today’s arena is the downward trend of places like CA, NY etc as film producers.

Louisiana of all places over the past 10 years is emerging as a major film producing state.
Just the past year it led the rankings according to this study:

snip

Ranking locations in terms of the most number of films that were primarily produced in each,
Louisiana ranked first with 18 movies. Canada and California tied with 15 movies apiece,
followed closely by the United Kingdom, which hosted 12. Rounding out the top five locations
was the State of Georgia, which hosted 9.

Went to the River Oaks many times. You ever go to the bar in the back of the building? No sign. The doorway was under the fire escape. Name was Marfreilus (sp?). Very dark place that played classical music.

No, I regret I missed that. There was a comedy club around there that had well known comedians.

I think the movie I saw being filmed in RO was, "The Thief that Came to Dinner."

Rory had problems throughout his life. Many exacerbated by alcohol.

He started our at Preston School of Industry in Ione CA, part of the Cal Youth Authority (notice CYA), then moved on to San Quentin and federal prison, all before age 21.

We (CYA) used to count I’m as one of our success stories.

So, you and I have one of Bacon’s ‘degrees of separation’ things, since we both met Rory C.

Rory did a good job in quite a few western movies, but I’m sure he was a hand full.

A little more. The director of Indian Paint was in the apt. next door to mine. He threw a big party and invited us and our families to drop in (most likely to prevent me from raising hell about the noise, etc.). .......My little sister was 14 at the time and was hoping Johnny Crawford would be there, as she thought he was so cute. ...The director called Johnny’s home in CA from the bedroom phone and the call was transferred to the barn. The director left my sister in the bedroom and closed the door so that she and Johnny could talk. ...Johnny was spending the night in the barn because his horse sick and that’s why he wasn’t in Dallas. Sister talked with him for almost an hour and was thrilled.

A Trip to Bountiful didn't make the list? Sacrilege!

Also, Dean Martin's Texas Across the River is one of the funniest movies ever made.

Pigskin Parade starring Ray Bolger and introducing Judy Garland.

It was Jack Haley, not Ray Bolger. I've seen that movie.
