Circa 1960's - Pan Am Boeing 747 Economy Class Seating

Late 1960s: Economy Class Seating on a Pan-Am 747

The 1960's were barely done when Pan Am again set a standard the rest of the world was forced to follow. Pan American's Boeing B-747 Jumbo Jets brought down the cost of long distance air travel once again.

I miss the three “C’s” that used to be found in society - civility, class & common sense...

Taking off from Suda Bay Crete at the moment of rotation we all heard this loud bang. One of the cargo latches had failed, no matter the crew said we would fly on, but don’t try to go back and use the John. A 4 hour flight, gee. Well after about 30 min the Battalion Chaplin in a loud voice booming out said “ The Hell with this”! , and went back to the John, he received applause upon his return and a steady line formed to take advantage of Gods blessing!

I liked the early Southwest stews and their outfits, tall boots, nice short hot pants and they all had a nice little wiggle walking up and down the isle. Ahhh, by the way, they were all gurls too!!! LOL

Free booze between Dallas and Houston. Heck, you bought the tickets at the gate, tickets that came off a cash register. Quite the war with American they had.

Waaah! Waaah! It's crowded.

Waaah! Waaah! People don't wear suits and dresses.

Waaah! Waaah! The stewardesses aren't sexy.

Bah!

Get a real airplane:

Been there, done that.

In the late 80’s I was a print buyer for a large catalog marketer, requiring frequent flights to Chicago (Elk Grove Village was and likely still is a major hub for printing). I actually looked forward to the 7:50 AM direct flight via Piedmont. The breakfast served was not just merely edible, it was good. Silver utensils. All the non-alcoholic beverage you wanted. Hot towel service afterwards. Coach, Boeing 727. They knew how to treat their customers, unlike the airline that bought them.

And only a small percentage of people could afford to fly...

"Preventing the Losers"

Geezus, just look at that text: "We look at her face, her make-up, her complexion, her figure, her weight, her legs, her grooming, "

Good God almighty! Can you even begin to imagine the thermonuclear reaction from the left if some airline ran an ad like that now? There are a few lady FReepers that would join them, I am certain. The "get her a cheeseburger" crowd might even chime in.

Of course, being unionized and all, the grandmothers now control the looks standards in the flight attendant ranks, so never happen. Eat all you want sweetie.

How far this country has fallen, so fast. One of the few things about getting older, will not have to watch that much more of the degradation.

Stupid movies showing people conversing inside a flying C-130 always tee me off. No freaking way could you hold a normal conversation.

Noisy as heck even in a KC-135 with the VIP pallet installed. Heck, even the C-141s were noisy. Military aircraft were never made for much in the way of creature comforts. The C-130s do take the cake though.

Had to cop a hop on one of the old Caribous (C-7?) a few times. Actually not as noisy, mostly I was just glad to get wherever and paid no attention to the noise.

The most fun, and noise, I had was in the Hueys from the Air Rescue Recovery Squadrons. We got to ride them quite a bit as they needed to know how to get to the missiles complexes so they flew crews every day except for bad weather.

Last time I took a flight, my fellow passengers mostly looked like they’d all crawled out from under some rocks. Sloppy, smelly, unkempt. Coupled with the insanity of all the long lines, metal detectors, taking my shoes off, etc., I vowed never to fly again.

You think that's bad? My wife was on a flight from Ok City to Chicago and her seat mate was Dan Rather.

You know, back in those days feminists actually did legitimately have somethings to be upset about.

On the other hand, that was the golden age of airlines and for a reason

notice how the people are dressed? I always wear a coat and tie when I fly. I stand out because so many people (particularly fellow Americans) look like winos.
