Why Do People Believe in Ghosts?

In June, Sheila Sillery-Walsh, a British tourist visiting the historic island-prison of Alcatraz in San Francisco, claimed that she captured an image of a ghost in a picture she snapped on her iPhone. In the frame of what was otherwise supposed to be a picture of an empty prison cell was a blurry black and white image of a woman. The story, which was printed in the British tabloid the Daily Mail, featured on the Bay Area's local KRON4 TV station and mocked by SFist, isn't the first time the Daily Mail has claimed that strange images have come up on smart devices.

Normally, a paranormal story wouldn’t catch my attention, but a few months before the story came out, a Spanish friend of mine named Laura showed me a weird image she found on her phone while I was traveling in Madrid. The photo, taken on her iPhone while on a trip to Ethiopia, shows a boy looking down at leaves he is holding in his hands. Seemingly superimposed onto the boy is another image of the boy, hands in a different position and eyes looking straight at the camera.

Laura was convinced she captured an image of a ghost.

Then a few weeks later I discovered an image of a man in the background of a photo I took with my own iPhone. The picture was taken in my apartment and the man, whom I can’t identify, was not actually in the apartment at the time.

Recent surveys have shown that a significant portion of the population believes in ghosts, leading some scholars to conclude that we are witnessing a revival of paranormal beliefs in Western society.

Meh... I've had something happen that didn't accord with the laws of nature and physics.

I wrote it off as an artifact of my fallible human mind.

Real as life, one moment. And in another, just a memory.

It's BS, even if I observe it, unless I can repeat it and document it.

God allowed the ghost (spirit) of Samuel to appear to and converse with Saul when he went to the witch of Endor. If God has a purpose to allow the soul of a departed person to visit the earth, He could make it happen.

Some experienced exorcists (including Fr. Amorth, the chief exorcist of Rome) have observed in the course of their ministry that God allows some souls to visit the earth as ghosts, but some of these are demons masquerading as a departed soul. One way they can be differentiated, he says, by the activity of the entity. If the entity displays frightening or threatening behavior, it is likely a demon. Ghosts, on the other hand, are more benign and seem to be allowed to appear on earth to complete some unfinished business.

Because people decide to chemically jack with their perceptions.

So everyone who sees something inexplicable are only seeing it because they are jacked up with drugs? Thats what atheists claim about people in the Bible who saw strange things,,,they were all dopers.

“The Miracle of the Sun” (dopers?)
http://www.fatima.org/essentials/facts/miracle.asp

“In July, August and September 1917, three Portuguese shepherd children claimed that a miracle was going to happen at midday on October 13th. Thousands of people gathered in the Cova da Iria fields near Fátima on the day to witness the event. Estimates of the number of people vary between 10,000 and 100,000.”

“Much to the surprise of local skeptics and media, the crowds did indeed witness a strange event.”
http://www.paranormal-encyclopedia.com/u/ufo/sightings/1917/fatima.html

At least 10,000 people all doped up and having the exact, same drug induced hallucination?

“I would like to know how a Christian could believe in ghosts.”

They would likely cite the story of Saul and the witch of Endor from 1st Samuel, chapter 28. The witch summons a spirit that speaks to Saul as if it were the prophet Samuel.

I have my own ghost story. Well kind of one. It happened about 40 years ago. I was working one night about midnight in the upstairs room of an historical building built in the 1800s. This is a very creaky building without plumbing or heat, but it is wired for electicity. So I hear the outside door slam downstairs and I figured it was one of my coworkers. Wait, did I lock the door? Yes, I did. I heard the footsteps across the creaky first floor then heard each step up the creaky first and second staircases to the door to the second floor room. No one came in. I said come on in! No one came in. Huh? Went to the door and opened it and no one was there. Amazing!

I went through the entire building and into the cellar and there was no one there. The outside door was also locked. Very strange! Never figured out what caused that. Anyone coming up the stairs would have been heard going down. Guess it was the wind. I spent many nights in that old place, but never had that happen again.

I mentioned it the next day to an old-timer who worked there and he said others had similar experiences, but no one ever saw anything. Just heard foorsteps.

“it sure stopped him from thinking “that’s impossible”

My dad used to say “it’s impossible for something to be impossible”. And he was a physicist.

Ergot comes to mind if they are eating the same bread, but that's just because I'm a cook and know that is a hallucinogen.

No, sometimes people see stuff because they are tired, or stressed, or because of lots of reasons. Not just drugs or booze they took on purpose.

I don't buy anything unless it's repeatable, and has an explanation.

A relative of mine had an entity that kept appearing in her condominium last year (other condo owners there also reported strange things happening). She said it wasn't really scary, but it kept popping up and she got tired of it being around (this girl, BTW, is well educated and very level headed). She sent us the picture below and asked our advice on what she could do (you can see the two figures in the lower left-hand corner). I told her to get her parish priest to come and pray a blessing over the condo and if that didn't work to ask about getting an exorcism for the condo. She had a priest come by a couple of days later and did the blessing and, as far as I know, hasn't had any more visits.

Certain low frequency sounds will make you hallucinate.
Dunno the exact reason offhand but probably can guess.

16-18 hz is horrible.

I once used 4" pvc to make a single pipe, pipe organ that resonated on that frequency.

Made everyone around crazy (except me, I knew about it and ignored the crazy stuff).

I think it's 14 hz that resonates best with the human gut and causes spastic evacuation.

I would never build anything like that.... more than once.

Probably for two reasons. :)

They aren’t aware that the Christian hope lies in the Resurrection. The other reason is that they aren’t familiar with what the Bible teaches.

A hot to primer on super villany..
Lol.
“Allow me to introduce you to the pipe organ of pain!”
Yes, horrible mental images came to mind.
I think it’s 16 hz that makes your brain take a vacation into surrealville.

Build it into the house structure as a tier of home defense.
