I take mine with me too, he’ll run that cat up a tree, and after that, you be sure he won’t be coming for you again.
I won’t shoot the cat unless it’s in season though, unless it’s a direct threat. I don’t just run around the woods shooting everything I see. I just keep my family safe.
Howdy Tumblindice. I just wanted to give you a heads up. I don’t think .45 is going stop most animals. If you’re doing your own loads and have a firearm that can take the extra pressure, then possibly. I’d just go with a .44 mag, or better yet, a 45-70.
I’d be curious though to hear if you’re loading and what kind of velocities you’re achieving and with which frame.
The "Ruger Only" loads for 45 Colt can be quite stout. I have some that I loaded up for a Blackhawk that are quite satisfying - 26 grains of H110 under a 250 grain JHP bullet. Plus, the recoil pulse isn't as snappy as a .44 Mag.
Any bear that attacks me is dead. Period. End of story. If I don’t get him Mrs. Mad will. Oh and if I catch one in my house it will assume room temperature. Same with big cats.
I talked to an old Mainer who used to work in logging. He wasn’t worried about black bears. He grew up picking wild blueberries. “They won’t bother you if you don’t bother them. Trouble is, you can get really close to one accidentally when you’re picking blueberries. You just have to remain still.”

That is pretty hot. I killed a black bear with my .44 mag. Three shots, first at 25 yds, last at the base if the tree I was in. Those were max loads of 24 grains of H110 under a 240 grain jacketed soft point. That same load showed pressure signs when fired from a friends .44 Super Blackhawk.

Can the New Vaquero handle that cup pressure?
No, only the guns based on the original Blackhawk frame. The New Vaquero is not as beefy, and can only handle traditional .45 Colt loads.
The .45 case has a lot more room in it than a .44 Mag case (which is actually a .43 caliber case), so this wasn’t even a 100% load. The stated pressures never exceed 30,000 CUP.
I understand. My statement was to reflect the fact that the animal didn’t come to your house.
