Make him an offer. Whether or not he’s using it, it’s his property and he has no obligation to give it to anyone. You are not obligated to pay the full $300 dollars either. Personally, I’d offer $150 and be willing to negotiate up to $200.

Tell him you would really like to have it. Money is tight everywhere, you are willing to pay the asking price that he was offering strangers...but you were hoping he had a “family option” and see what he offers/suggests.

Put the ball in his court as to how much he values family over the dollar...though you might need to consider he really needs the money too and may ask you to pay his asking price.

Your father or father-in-law has spent a lot of time and money to design and build a really nice (birch) entertainment center. Something that would probably cost $1k, if not more, in a furniture store. He no longer uses it and although he has tried to sell it, has not been able to, so it just sits in his house now, after 3-4 years. You would like to have it.

What is most acceptable if you wanted the unit?

A) Paying him the $300 he's asking for it, because he put a lot of time and money into it and you respect that (and him)

B) Refusing to pay any money, because he's family and family should just give you what's been sitting in their house that they can't get rid of, that they aren't using.

C) Other

Don't even consider option B, it's insulting. How insulting? Think about how you feel when some gibsmedat screams for you to pay for new phone/car/TV/etc for them, when the one they have is already better than yours?

Don't be a gibsmedat. Pay the craftsman an honest price.
