Wasted youth and the best comedy movies - a minor break from the daily fare(Vanity)
Me | Me

Okay so I recently hired a few recent college grads in technical roles and a conversation was struck up at the end of the day. The conversation was a result of a missed movie reference during another conversation earlier in the day. The type of thing where you assume some level of common culture so you don't have to explain in more detail.

What follows in my comment was the result and follow-on question for my fellow Freepers.

The thing I remember about Johnny dangerously is the theme song that was written and performed by weird Al Yankovich. One stanza in particular:

You’re dead for a real long time
You just can’t prevent it
So if money can’t buy happiness
I guess I’ll have to rent it

Wow, I forgot about that one. It was priceless.

And I also remember what happened right after his brother got married. His new wife yelled “that’s it??!!”

It’s right up there with the “Men make the strangest requests...” picture.

Roger Debris: Oh Dear...It’s the dress, isn’t it.
We’re going to the choreographer’s ball and there is a prize for the best costume.
I’m supposed to be the Grand Duchess Anastasia, but I think I look like Tugboat Annie!

Carmen Ghia: Well you know, it’s not complete without the wig!

Roger: Well then fetch it, oh Wicked Witch of the West!

Carmen: If you meant to shoot an arrow directly into my heart, BULLSEYE!!!!

The whole Roger/Carmen thing isn’t so much funny because of the actual dialog, but more so for the over-the-top way they deliver it.

Office Space (1999)

Bob Porter: Looks like you've been missing a lot of work lately. Peter Gibbons: I wouldn't say I've been *missing* it, Bob.

Milton: ...but then, they switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler, but I kept my Swingline stapler because it didn't bind up as much, and I kept the staples for the Swingline stapler and it's not okay because if they take my stapler then I'll set the building on fire...

I have also noted the relative lack of familiarity some younger people have with classic comedy. Maybe they are the post-television generation and only get entertainment via the Internet.
