Secret stash of Moon artifacts found hidden in Neil Armstrong's closet

After Neil Armstrong's death, his widow, Carol, discovered a white cloth bag in a closet, containing what were obviously either flight or space related artifacts. She contacted Allan Needell, curator of the Apollo collection at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, and provided photographs of the items. Needell, who immediately realized that the bag—known to the astronauts as the Purse - and its contents could be hardware from the Apollo 11 mission, asked the authors for support in identifying and documenting the flight history and purpose of these artifacts. After some research it became apparent that the purse and its contents were lunar surface equipment carried in the Lunar Module Eagle during the epic journey of Apollo 11.

The McDivitt Purse, named that way in honor of Apollo 9 Commander Jim McDivitt, who wanted a stowage bag that could be positioned at the front of the spacecraft to hold items, such as the purge valves, which might otherwise fall to the cabin floor while they were preparing for EVAs.

Neil Armstrong is one of my all-time favorite American heroes.

I remember as if it were yesterday when he and the other Apollo 11 astronauts landed on the moon.

Guys in the comments thank the resident for a law letting them keep these artifacts. All praise to Zero? The resident can’t write his own laws — yet.

Neil Armstrong
C'mon, he couldn't have been all that important. When he died, my local Gannett rag printed the story on page 4.
And you know the only reason he got into NASA was because of white privilege.

Actually, he was one of the bravest men who ever lived.

"Actually, he was one of the bravest men who ever lived."

He was also the very definition of modesty. The man could have wrote his own ticket forever and yet went on to live a quiet modest life. The temptations he must have resist.

He should have taken them to Pawn Stars.
And then walked right out when Rick, or the other two idiot kids, low balled him.

Someone needs to call Brad Meltzer. He was looking for those moon rocks on his Lost History show a month or so back.

I’m sure Rick has a moon rock authenticator hiding behind an Elvis statue.

Didn’t Hillary claim she wanted to be an astronaut but was stifled by male privilege?

http://www.thespacereview.com/article/2310/1

The fiftieth anniversary of the first woman in space is a fitting hook to look back over the long process of enabling gender-independent access to the final frontier. One of the interesting secondary tales associated with this theme is the campaign story offered by Hillary Clinton that, in 1961–2, she wrote to NASA about her interest on becoming an astronaut, and they dismayed and angered her by replying, “We don’t take girls.”..

The story is clearly politically useful, and comments on its actual authenticity have predictably split along partisan lines. Clinton herself never indicated she kept the letter, so there’s no documentation at her end.

A crew of merchant marines were about to ship out and the women were saying their goodbyes. As they did so, a dog ran and jumped on the boat.

One of the women asked, why can’t any women come along?

The captain replied, because nobody gets upset about who pets the dog.

They went to the moon with a wrench that looks like it came out of the spare tire kit of my 1978 Honda Civic. Wow.

Didn’t Hillary claim ...
Is that the same Hillary who claimed she was named (in 1947) after the first man to reach the summit of Mount Everest (in 1953) Sir Edmund Hillary? Oops.
