You've heard of the Big Bang, but what about the "Colossal Crash?" Get ready, because it might be coming sooner than you think ... relatively speaking.
In a paper published in Physical Review Letters a group of physicists have theorized a mechanism for "cosmological collapse" which predicts the universe will at some point stop expanding and then collapse back onto itself, destroying us and pretty much all matter.
The idea has been floating around the scientific community in one form or another for a while now, but the latest paper is noteworthy because its numbers and models suggest that collapse is "imminent" -- at least on a cosmological scale.
"The fact that we are seeing dark energy now could be taken as an indication of impending doom, and we are trying to look at the data to put some figures on the end date," Antonio Padilla at the University of Nottingham, one of the paper's authors, told Phys.org. "Early indications suggest the collapse will kick in in a few tens of billions of years, but we have yet to properly verify this."
Our universe is currently in a period of accelerated expansion so we have nothing to worry about for the moment, but in the paper's conclusion, the team of scientists claim they've found the cause our impending doom ... but they need to do a bit more research.

Maybe, but A) I don’t care for Spam, and B) the can will change shape, making it impossible to open. ;’)
Dang! I just picked up our Easter ham.....maybe, I should fix it for dinner tonight.
I’ve been cranky lately, but you made me LOL!
That is an excellent graphic and caption. I feel better now. Thanks!
He’s Italian...
Talks with his tentacles a lot...
Sorry - we don’t know if “Big Bang” exists, if “Grand Crunch” exists now, if there is ANY reason to be assured how our universe will develop now. To say that this is grasping at straws is a great understatement.
The big crunch has been around since 1930. It’s not the prevailing view now.
But I don’t think anyone has asked Galactus yet.
Um, we don't even know Dark Matter. It's a mythical invention to
explain something scientists do not understand, to fill the void.
“Ill take that Time Travelling phone booth of Dr. Who...”
That thing is a British Police Box, not a phone booth. It’s called the Tardis, and the guy STOLE it, which is why he drives it as he does; rather like a neophyte car thief who can’t drive a stick trying to escape with a Mazda RX-7.
Must have gotten Ted and Bill’s phone booth mixed up with Dr. Who’s box. Actually, having watched every episode of “Midsommer’s Murders” (WETA-UK), I should have recognized that the red box was a police call box and rain shelter.
Never really got into Dr. Who. Some of the weird aliens reminded me of the boxes used in Buzz Corey and His Space Cadets or Captain Midnight shows in the early 50’s. Tacky!
Give me a good old “Wormhole” from “Farscape” any time though the one in “The Black Hole” was pretty impressive too.
Re “It’s called the Tardis, and the guy Stole it, which is why he drives it as he does..” Does this mean that he is a “ReTardist”?
I never looked at much of the older Dr. Who, but my daughter got into it with the Tenth Doctor, and I thought it was pretty good. Also, they cast Billie Piper as his companion, which made the show quite easy on the eyes.
