What do we call me? I’m a 26-year-old writer who lives in a gentrifying neighborhood in Brooklyn. I’m a straight white man with a single-speed bike and a mustache. I studied liberal arts in college, and I have ideas about stuff, you guys.
Millennial? Hipster? Yuppie? All of these, or none? We don’t have a term that quite encapsulates this corner of the despicable millenn-intelligensia. And like any other privileged member of a so-called “creative class,” being called a hipster offends me for its inaccuracy. I demand to be snarked in precise terms.
Let's consider something new: Yuccies. Young Urban Creatives. In a nutshell, a slice of Generation Y, borne of suburban comfort, indoctrinated with the transcendent power of education, and infected by the conviction that not only do we deserve to pursue our dreams; we should profit from them.
I am the yuccie. And it sounds sort of, well, yucky.

Does anyone share my ambivalence?
On the one hand, I admire the idealism & creativity of the younger generation. I wish success to anyone focused on a dream, or at least a great new beer. Heck, I myself would love to sit in my room all day & blog (or FReep!).
However, the search for "meaningful work" does not do well once tradition (aka marriage & children) comes into the picture & compromises in lifestyle must be made. Maybe this guy should have taken the pharmaceutical marketing job & done his "true passion" on the side. Either that or win the lottery -- or live with his parents till age 40.
Maybe what a "yuccie" really wants is to be a starving artist without the starving part.

Eventually they will learn they want what every other generation before them has. At that point some of them will wake up to just how badly they have screwed themselves.

Yuccies will do for me. As far as their being “creative”, don’t make me laugh. They’re as dopey and simplistic as they come. Their art sucks. Their music sucks. Their style of dress sucks. The food they eat sucks...

“Unemployed” is right. The problem, as I see it, is their extreme independence. They seems to want jobs on their own terms. They will probably quit the minute they have a bad day with the boss, or boredom or disillusionment sets in. I have had to explain to a number of them that every job has its tedium; not everyone is going to be nice, etc.
I in fact know a number of people who spent $$$ on law or medical school, only to drop out once they actually started practicing these professions. (This is one aspect of student loans that has not been addressed.)
In other words they are spoiled, self-indulgent children who want everything handed to them and do not want to have to do anything difficult or unpleasant.
My 26 year old daughter is a manager for a large corporation and supervises recent college graduates.
She says they are so into themselves it is ridiculous. She talks about how difficult it is to get them to take responsibility and actually get things done.
Fifth Century AD, some grizzled Roman General looked over the dough-bellied loungers strumming lyres and meditating on how very creative they were and how much that really mattered, and he shrugged his shoulders and wept for what was about to happen to his country. He was right.
I don’t get the single speed bike. This has become cool, but why?
I am leaning towards going back to a 3 speed, with an upright stance. But a heavy single speed, no way.
That describes the baby-boomers, and pretty much everyone after. Try again.
Modern boot camp would reinforce his snowflakeness, not cure it.

Swear no matter what these idiots call themselves, they just have such an inflated ego about how important or creative they think they are.
Go produce something!
The young people I know seem very idealistic. In some ways that is good, but they will still need to pay the rent. Hopefully they will be good enough at what they do to do both.
Two are into “social justice” things. One because she’s Liberal, the other because she’s Christian. Two others are going to be Missionaries. One is studying psychology and theology - youth ministry/education.
We’ll see.
I find that many are sensitive to the slightest negativity or criticism.
I have lived with a few. Even a mild reprimand or reminder like “Please, would you put away the dishes after use,” earns me the sourest look. (Someone said to me, “Maybe if you had said, ‘I really feel bad when the dishes are left in the sink . . . .”)
At some point I exclaimed, “Why do I have to kiss people just for common courtesy?”
Yuccie (noun): A young, effete, effeminate, unaccomplished, self-loathing urban male.

I never ceases to amaze me that New Yorkers think that there is nothing outside New York.......
