Richmond Police Officer Shoots K-9 After Dog Bites Him: Police
NBC Bay Area ^ | Jun 23, 2015 | Riya Bhattacharjee

A Richmond police officer shot one of the department's K-9 officers on Tuesday morning after the dog bit him, authorities said.

Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said the act was in self-defense.

She said the dog, a 3-year-old Belgian Malinois, bit the officer just before 7 a.m. in the parking lot of the Richmond Police Department. The K-9’s handler left his car with the dog still in it to go inside the station for a meeting, police said. The dog somehow got out of the car and bit another police officer in civilian clothes. The officer who was attacked, a four-year veteran of the department, fired his handgun once, according to police.

The officer was taken to the hospital after suffering unknown injures. The dog suffered critical injuries and was taken to a PETS Referral Center in Berkeley, Abetkov said. The dog has since been transferred to a UC Davis veterinary hospital and is now in a stable condition, authorities said.

It was not immediately clear what prompted the dog to bite the officer. Authorities said the dog had never had a problem before.

Police investigators said they plan to scrutinize the system of extra locks and remote controls packed into each K-9 patrol cars.

“Everything will be checked out with a fine-toothed comb,” Abetkov said.

Richmond police has a 54-year history of using police dogs – more than half of that time with the Belgian Malinois breed. The dogs were initially recruited to search Richmond’s numerous warehouses. Officers use them now mostly for tracking felony suspects and searching for evidence and narcotics.

“54-year history of using police dogs – more than half of that time with the Belgian Malinois breed”

Nonsense. BelMals were virtually unknown even 20 years ago.

Excellent deduction.

May explain the first plain-clothes officer who got bitten.

Does it explain his own master 2nd?

You all are assuming.

Again, some details are left out. We don’t know for sure if he LEFT THE CAR RUNNING, or not. It does not state. Also does not state how long this “meeting” was to be. Doesn’t even state when he left the car - only that he and his colleague were bitten just before 7am.

Again, the master handler is a boy.

He needs to be charged for killing a police officer, just like they would a citizen.

Police cars typically run the ac for cases where keeping a K-9 on standby is necessary.

In my 35 years raising and Dobermanns, experience has shown it is almost always the human in the wrong.

That was my first instinct as well, but we have no evidence (yet) to support that.

I am interested in seeing how bad the wounds are from the "attack".

There is a difference between simply being bitten and a full on attack.

BTW - We have a small Doberman (65 lbs) who is (Like most Dobies) very sweet and well behaved. We laugh when people walk across the street when they see us coming with her.

Most K-9 vehicles are fitted out to leave running with the AC on.

So if John Q. Public did the same thing, the police would be outraged and pontificating over “officer safety”.

But when they shoot their own dog, it’s apparently no longer an “officer”.

The hierarchy is clearly:

The State > Police > Police Dogs > Ordinary Citizens > Ordinary Citizens’ Dogs

Surely police dogs can sense which officers are known dog-killers.

And given what most police dogs suffer, it’s hardly surprising that the dog lashed out:

The Lord gives us dogs to protect us and teach us love, honor and devotion.

The Enemy seeks to destroy and break dogs.

Yes but in Pascagoula an officer did this and went in the police precinct for hours, assuming his car was still running. It wasn’t. But the DA and Police Chief said it was “an unfortunate accident.” I don’t believe he was even reprimanded.

"Its a felony to shoot a police dog"

I am thankful this happened to a policeman because if it had been a civilian then he'd be arrested for attempted murder of a police officer.

Something to think about.

The dog wouldn’t care about a uniform, the odd part is how he got out of the car, that doesn’t make sense to me.

The mals were an AKC breed here in the 50’s. Been around longer than you think, I think 1890-1900 in Europe.

I’m very aware of breeds and history.

They were not in the public eye until maybe 20 years ago, when it seems Po and MIL started picking them up. Still not big in the public eye.

Wirehaired Pointing Griffons have been around for ages, too, but you hardly even see them at shows. They are not popular, and virtually unknown except us dog wonks. Regardless of registration.
