Dentist who killed Cecil the lion speaks out at last after going into hiding

The US dentist whose killing of Cecil the lion fuelled a global backlash has emerged for an interview and says he will return to work on Tuesday.

Walter Palmer has disputed some accounts of the hunt, expressed agitation at the animosity directed at those close to him and says he will be back at work within days.

Palmer, who has spent more than a month out of sight after becoming the target of protests and threats, intends to return to his suburban Minneapolis dental practice on Tuesday.

In an interview on Sunday conducted jointly by The Associated Press and the Minneapolis Star Tribune that advisers said would be the only one granted, Palmer said again that he believes he acted legally and that he was stunned to find out his hunting party had killed one of Zimbabwe's treasured animals.

"If I had known this lion had a name and was important to the country or a study obviously I wouldn't have taken it," Palmer said.

He will not sleep well, He will never know when his next patient has come there to hunt him. He is also under investigation by the US FWS so more will be heard in the future.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. He is scum. And now I just read that there is only a 5% chance that Cecil’s offspring will not be killed by a rival male. So big brave Dr. Jerk actually killed like 7 lions, 6 of them babies. Big “man”, huh? I hope he never has another peaceful day in his life.

The guy paid for a hunting safari in Africa, as many have done before him. The only people in the world who give a damn are the PETA-type nutbags in the US. How is he a scumbag?

No he’s not. He shot and killed a lion that nobody in that entire country cared about because they’re too busy cannibalizing each other.

Your definition of scumbag sets a pretty low tolerance bar.

We at least know he caused the lion great pain in its killing and he gets his jollies in a grotesque way.

It sounds like such hunters may lead to a net good for the animals over there however, and I expect he has suffered sufficiently for his crime.

I hope he is also successfully extradited to face charges of killing a research animal and then trying to destroy the collar. Cowardly scumbag indeed.

If reports are correct, they baited the lion to leave a known restrictive area.

When you are on safari, you know what you are allowed to kill.

Didn't know that we had such progressive anti hunters here on FR. Cecil was getting on up in years and lions that age are generally culled or are killed by a younger male to take the older male's females. As to his cubs getting killed, that's called nature.

Cecil was a normal lion. As far as I can see he was killed in a legal, ethical hunt.

I would not kill a lion for sport.

But then, Lions kill lesser creatures for sport.

In the final analysis, it was, after all...just a cat.

We have bigger fish to fry!

He went and killed the lion they showed him. I doubt very much he knew that PETA revered the lion. Upon questioning, the locals and the government had no clue about it.

If Cecile were a normal lion, killed ethically, no one would have ever known what a scumbag Walter Palmer is! He also poached a bear and was convicted of that. Unfortunately, he will do a similar thing again. That is who he is.

I would guess that the kook element will probably drop off to zero after a year. That is the outer limit of pop culutre consciousness. The feds will go elsewhere, too, since it was not their jurisdiction and this is political. If pop culture moves on, so does this WH.
