DOVER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WWJ/AP) — Police say a golfer from Ohio has died after being stung at least 20 times by bees as he searched for a ball in woods in northern Michigan.

Michigan State Police Sgt. Mark Tamlyn says Darryl Dever of Powell was pronounced dead Wednesday after having trouble breathing.

Tamlyn told WWJ Newsradio 950 that Dever and a friend — a doctor — were golfing together at Treetops Resort’s north course when Dever went into the woods to retrieve a ball.

The conservative movement’s given up on being classy in the Trump era.

Hmmm. Ground bees. Is that like land sharks?

Linked article says that these alleged "ground bees" are solitary, so unless the deceased golfer did a dance over 20 holes, these weren't bees that did the deed.

Furthermore, what type of bees are "solitary?" It goes against the whole hive mentality. Maybe these so-called "ground bees" are technically "bees," but they are not proper bees.

And don't get me started on "bumble" bees. Mere coloration does not a bee make, at least in my book.

I can’t imagine what his doctor friend must be feeling, not being able to save him.

May God bless the man’s loved ones with comfort and strength.

I can see since he had never had a reaction to bee stings before he went on playing golf. 20 stings is a lot I am surprised his doctor friend did not advise him to seek help. I find that strange.

Honey Bees don’t build hives in the ground..Many other varieties of bees and wasps do.

They were probably yellow jackets, which are wasps.

I have had two life threatening ‘bee’ encounters. One was when I was exploring the caves on Saipan just after WWII ended. Crawling through some ground brush I really got swarmed. Buddies took me to the base hospital where I spent three days recuperating. The second time was after WWII when I was deer hunting in the Mendocino mountains. I had just branched off from my deer hunting buddy when I didn’t duck low enough to avoid bumping an unseen hive. I was covered with angry bees until we finally clear them. We immediately headed for home a couple of hundred miles away and before we got home I passed out. Lucky for me we lived only a couple of blocks from a hospital to where I was taken. I spent 3 days recovering in the hospital.

They are nasty. I had a hive of them in an open area of an addition onto the house. Sprayed the heck out of them. Killed a ton that way, but there were more left. When the colder weather arrived, I plugged the area with that foam spray. Problem solved.

Yes, they’re very aggressive. Even worse in my experience, is the bald-faced hornet, which is actually a type of yellow jacket (wasp). I was on antibiotics for weeks after being bitten by one that followed me into the house.
