CA School District Changes Grading Scale, 80% or Better is Now an ‘A,’ 20% or Lower is an ‘F’

Sonoma County, California school district has instituted a new grading scale that substantially lowers the bar to allow underachieving students, traditionally known as failures, to climb into more average grade territory.

It’s called the equal interval scale, and according to The Press Democrat, “it makes it harder to get a failing grade” by moving the ‘F’ scale to below 20% as opposed to the standard 59% and below. The equal interval scale is modeled to raise grades in 20-point increments, which would mean scores between 20% and 40% will now earn students a D- or D+. Making a score of 80 or above now makes them straight-A students.

A middle school math and science teacher told the Democrat that his worst math students are now receiving Cs and a science student with only a 23% grade has earned a D-.

Speaking before the school board, this teacher complained, “This isn’t giving students hope, it is lowering standards in order to raise grades.” Wow.

So, what’s happening is that kids will receive high school diplomas nowadays without having to do any work and for failing miserably?

We’re literally encouraging students to be failures?

A for effort, California!

What good does this do for future American leaders?

I guess Sonoma County is setting up these kids to be fast-food workers for life.

Doesn’t anyone have to take responsibility for their actions anymore?

Where have all the adults gone?

By implementing this fundamentally ridiculous idea, what’s the point of even having teachers in classrooms?

I wonder if the thinking at the time went something like this…

California has a large number of minorities living in the state, and many students aren’t passing their classes. Let’s just make things easier for everyone. I mean, we don’t want to look like racists!

Like liberal policies, the Sonoma County school district will do whatever it can to keep people down.

Lady Liberty weeps.

The dumbing down of America continues.

They want an ignorant / PC to a fault / easy to manipulate populace. In other words, future Democrat voters.

Why don’t they just skip the entire, silly high school thing and hand them a diploma when they turn 16?

Lots of money could be saved.

No wonder many kids today cannot do simple math in their head or find the USA on a map. (Of course many don’t have maps according to the brilliant Miss Alabama.)

50% of 25 year olds are now still living with their parents.

Could the two issues be related? worthless degrees being handed out to completely illiterate kids who no one will hire after talking to them for 30 seconds.

Sounds like “equality” and socialism to me. No one will want to excel in that environment and they’ll reap what they sow.

My thought exactly. Hire baby sitters at $15 an hour to house them and hand them diplomas when they get old enough. Same results for a fraction of the cost.

You can be a C student by knowing 20% of the material and then guessing right on one out of four multiple choice questions where you don’t know the answer.

20% is a big hurdle we’re demanding of these kids. Doesn’t seem fair to put that kind of burden on them. /s

Any parents in the school district who plan on having their children attend college will be moving out of the school district ASAP as the grades reported by the schools will have no meaning to their admission process.

You can imagine what will happen to the school district when all the smarter students leave the school district.

And if all the tests are multiple choice, and the number of choices on each problem is 4, and there 100 problems or more per test, and 3 or fewer tests per semester, it is statistically unlikely that anyone will get less than 20% on more than one test per semester.

On the other hand, they could implement it statewide to remove the ‘Asian advantage’. If half of them have straight A’s, then it’s not discriminatory to ignore the Asian kid.

Redistribution of wealth, redistribution of academic achievement ... its all the same.

So the students that put forth almost no effort to get 60% on an exam will now have incentive to work even less ... to get the 20% ...

Everyone get a trophy, because they participated in a sporting event ... everyone gets a diploma because they showed up.

In that case, they’ll go to 3 question multiple choice tests by law.
