The first-ever web page is still up at its original URL
Cern — Usenet ^ | August 6, 1991 | Tim Berners-Lee

Posted on 11/07/2015 8:22:46 PM PST by Swordmaker

This is literally the start of the World Wide Web. This is Tim Berners-Lee's very first Web Page. The FIRST Web Page ever. . . the literal starting point of the Internet.

It still exists as Tim Berners-Lee wrote it. On August 6, 1991, Tim Berners-Lee posted in the Usenet group alt.hypertext about a project he was working on called the World Wide Web--or, as he referred to it, "W3," a shorthand that surprisingly never caught on. The first webpage is still there at its original address on the CERN high-energy physics lab's site, substantially unchanged--no background, no graphics, just plain text and some links to other information about the nascent Web.

The Project: World Wide Web

Memory Lane is depressing. I prefer Mammary Lane.

Of course, the Internet existed before this first WWW page. The web and the internet are not the same thing. The web was what turned into the internet something useful to the general public. Much of the internet use prior to the Web involved transferring large data files between researchers via ftp. Usenet fora could also be accessed via the Internet.

That was my first experience with the Internet.

Interesting last line. I wonder if the hackers that call themselves “Anonymous” got their name from this?

Back then logging in with username "anonymous" was quite normal, and was the standard way to log in as a guest.

Impossible. I don’t see Al Gore’s name anywhere on that page.

If you found that information on the internet, then it must be true!

If I'd known computers were going to be so popular I'd have invested heavily in keypunch machines. You can't run computers without them.

Full disclosure here: this is being sent via a new desktop that I assembled yesterday. It measures 4 inches square and about an inch high. The little bugger supports a 4K monitor. Now I gotta buy a 4K monitor...

its rather shocking that when I first got on the web in 1994... a full two years later the entire web world had already begun its explosion

That’s not the first webpage, the first webpage is obviously the one Al Gore made which states “I Created the internets”

[[How can it have links to other information if it was the only webpage there was? ]]

The creator was psychic and getting a jump on the action by posting future links-

Can’t be real. I clicked on the “People” link and Al Gore wasn’t listed.

/snark

PS They even kept the original typos!

I’m afraid after all these years, you would find your fond memories to lack support; they would be a big let-down.

:-( The jargon link doesnt work. Sooo disappointed because someone posted an early, early link (mid 90s) to an illustrated glossary- in cartoon style- of internet personality types & it was a scream. I lost the bookmark when my hard drive had to be replaced.

I’ll never find it again. It was in a comment on a volcano forum during the Bardabunga eruptions. (Hint hint. If anyone has this…pleeeease!)
