Cop pulls over Google self-driving car, finds no driver to ticket

No driver? No ticket.

That, at least, was the result when a police officer pulled over one of Google's self-driving cars Thursday in Mountain View, California.

The car wasn't speeding. On the contrary, it was driving too slowly -- 24 miles per hour in a 35 mph zone, according to the Mountain View Police Department -- with traffic apparently backing up behind it.

-- David E. Weekly (@dweekly) November 12, 2015 "As the officer approached the slow moving car he realized it was a Google Autonomous Vehicle," a police department post said.

Which is to say that no one was driving the darn thing.

There was, however, a passenger. So the officer asked the passenger how the car was choosing speeds along certain roadways.

He also took the opportunity to inform the passenger about 22400(a) of the California Vehicle Code, which related to impeding traffic -- a section of the law the self-driving car may have been unfamiliar with.

The easiest way a Google Car could cause a fatality would be for one to delay an ambulance enroute to an injured person.
I imagine there is already some facility that enables the car to react to loud sirens, but how quickly, and in what directions?

Some human has the responsibility for this and needs to pay the fine.

Driving a vehicle without a driver is not a violation?

Copyright the idea!
I would make a great half-hour action TV episode.

We've already had one episode of a smart car deliberately remotely causing accidents.

That is my biggest fear with these cars. Now we’ll be stuck going just under 25 mph or 55mph. Traffic is going to be a nightmare. Can you run these cars off the road?

In 10 years that will be normal. Maybe less. GM Super Cruise launches next year.

I hate to rain on your parade, but...

Have you heard of the retards flashing lasers at airline pilots trying to land?

Hacking the autonomous car will be found easier for the morons.

Imagine that...
Literally insane children of all ages are all over the place. And they all vote.

At one time I couldn’t imagine buying french fries with a credit card - or otherwise living completely cashless - but now it’s the norm.

Except your life and/or health doesn't depend on it.

Yeah, my kids are being driven down the road in my brand new driverless vehicle and some pervert sees that there is no driver in the car and swerves to disable the car and grab my kids.

There is no fail-safe for that.

Where I am, traffic would probably improve if all the humans were replaced by robots even if the speed limit were to be reduced to 45 from 55.

That said, I am in Northern Virginia. I-66 can be a royal pain.

well...this is where the law is behind the technology. The passenger is by no means “the operator”, no means of control. So I can’t agree.
