Company unveils airplane design with seats on top of aircraft

Introducing the SkyDeck-- a patent-pending seat design that aims to give a few lucky passengers a 360 degree view of the surrounding clouds by sitting them on top of the plane in a fully transparent bubble.

Unlike other seat design models, the SkyDeck is designed to be incorporated into existing types of aircraft and would cost between $8 million to $25 million to install depending on the type of plane.

"Current in-flight entertainment offerings have not changed much over the decades. We wanted to come up with a product that would provide a higher level of entertainment to reduce the boredom of long flights," says Windspeed of the new design.

"Oh, look, mom. Another cloud."

Man, you must be a ground pounder.
I'd pay double to ride in that seat.

No two clouds are the same, and they're all beautiful from the air.

Now, practical downsides:
1) That's a lot of additional drag (assuming more than one set of bubble seats) for aircraft that use computers to load only the fuel they need (plus reserves) to make a trip.
2) Since airliners almost always fly above the weather these seat would always be in the sunshine. Unbearable heat and sunburn would be issues (spoken as one who flies under a canopy - and uses a retractable shade).

It’d be the place to be for landings though.

I liked this view from a B17 ride I took once, granted it’s a rear view.

My father was in the Coast Guard. When I was about six, he took me with him on a trip in a PBY Catalina when he had to do some work on another island from where we lived. The plane had the gun blisters on the side of the fuselage and I got to go up and sit in it for a good part of the flight. Coolest thing ever.

I would rather be able to see the ground. Much more interesting.
= = = = = = = = = = = =

then you would probably have an interest in the belly turret on the WWII Bombers....

I was about 7 when the war ended and saw so many AF movies, I was convinced by 10 that I wanted to be a belly turret gunner. My uncle, USN Vet sort of informed me that a - you are THE target, b - any problem with landing gear etc and I also think he threw in if I knew where ANY liquid from ANY part of the plane would settle prior leaving the craft.

He was pretty much of a BS’er (in this case a realist) but I had no problem believing him and my next ‘great love’ for the Military was the USMC Dress Blues which I also NEVER wore, settling for the USN uniform.
