Is Trump, Falling In the Polls, Being Driven to Desperation?
News Machete ^ | 1/8/2016 | Ed Straker

Donald Trump has attacked Ted Cruz's eligibility to be President, after saying repeatedly that he saw no problem with it:

Donald Trump said in an interview that rival Ted Cruz's Canadian birthplace was a "very precarious" issue that could make the Texas senator vulnerable if he became the Republican presidential nominee.

"Republicans are going to have to ask themselves the question: 'Do we want a candidate who could be tied up in court for two years?' That'd be a big problem," Trump said when asked about the topic. "It'd be a very precarious one for Republicans because he’d be running and the courts may take a long time to make decision. You don’t want to be running and have that kind of thing over your head."

This represent Donald Trump's second change of position on the subject. Here's a quote from September of last year:

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has reversed his position on Ted Cruz's eligibility to run for president, now saying his Canadian birthplace shouldn't disqualify him.

"I hear it was checked out by every attorney and every which way and I understand Ted is in fine shape," Trump told ABC News just before speaking at a Capitol Hill rally blasting the Iran nuclear deal.

I think what's going on here is that Donald Trump is panicking. A great lover of polls, he has seen himself repeatedly falling to second place in Iowa, and now he has fallen to second place in California, behind Ted Cruz.

His behavior resembles Jeb Bush. When Jeb was falling in the polls, he tried saying anything he could to arrest his decline in popularity. Remember how he said "anchor babies" to try and mimic Donald Trump? Or when he oddly told a crowd that Donald Trump is a jerk? Trump seems to be at a loss for words at how to respond to Ted Cruz, contradicting his earlier positions to attack him. Trump has tried attacking Ted Cruz's faith, he has tried attacking Ted Cruz for fighting the GOP establishment, and he has tried to attack Cruz for supporting a border fence, even though Cruz supported one long before Trump did.

Trump's behavior shows that he will say or do anything to be elected President. He was pro-amnesty for illegal aliens, now he's against it. He criticized Bill Clinton's sexual assaults, but invited the alleged rapist to his wedding (because as a businessman, he liked to get along with everybody-even alleged rapists). He was against funding Planned Parenthood on August 3rd, but supported subsidizing Planned Parenthood on August 11th.

Chairman Mao had a hard base of supporters called "To Whateverists", who said

We will resolutely uphold whatever policy decisions Chairman Mao made, and unswervingly follow whatever instructions Chairman Mao gave

It didn't matter what the instructions were, as long as they came from Chairman Mao. Donald Trump has his own group of supporters in the same category, but if the polls keep going in the same direction, they are going to have a very bitter February and March.

Oh, you Trump people... you are a hoot!

Trump responded to that question in a way that was sure to make it an issue.

What’s wrong with that if you’re running for president and someone is gaining on you?

But you people feel compelled to maintain the illusion that it was all well meant and really, really just done to help Cruz clear the air on the issue.

Sell that somewhere else.

My interpretation of the birther attack on Cruz is this: The 2 get together and say 'hey look, let's dominate and block the headlines until Iowa with a story that hurts neither of us.'

No other explanation. Trump too smart to pick this clearly losing argument that he already knew would do no damage. What is HAS done is CLARIFY that Cruz is all cleared to run.

Neither of those things are a mistake, both of these guys and their campaigns are too smart. They agreed to shut out the competition from here till Iowa. After Iowa -> a new inertia will take the nomination.

What difference does it make who wins in Iowa?

Only 4 out of the last 10 winners in Iowa got the nomination in the end, not counting Reagan and Bush 43 who ran unopposed in one of their races.

As long as Trump is in the 1st three, it makes no difference.

Hi, Altura! Happy Saturday.

Lumping all Trump supporters together is an insulting way to start a comment. Why don't you learn from Ted Cruz and take the high road and just make your comments. Let's make FreeRepublic great again. Stop the bashing.

I didn’t mean that as bashing... I thought it was a friendly take on the passion of the Trump supporters. I actually admire that passion but sometimes it leads to taking ridiculous positions.

I am not a Trump basher... never was. If he can win, I’m fine with that.

I happen to think Cruz would be a better president and I happen to think that Trump was going after Cruz when amping up the citizenship thing.

If that’s bashing... well, you need to work on being over-sensitive. You won’t do well here...we all need thick skins.

Their positions are pretty close. I think Trump would probably hit the ground much faster on trade and the economy than Cruz while Cruz may be able to help tackle the Washington leviathan.

I think both Trump and Cruz would eventually have to cave on some conservative positions in order to push more important stuff through.

As for thick skin, I'm dedicated to not being part of the rhetoric that makes Free Republic a toxic place.

That would be a great start.

No I comment on many fine Americans because they are mesmerized by a svengali oligarch. Im sure many fine Americans, as you call them, voted for Obama too. Many fine Germans voted for a Svengali. People see what they want to see and its got nothing to do with Ted Cruze or me or factual reasoning for that matter. How Christianity got drug into it is way beyond me.

These are my observations and I mean you no disrespect your vote is your vote.
