Has FreeRepublic Jumped The Shark With Trump?
2/14/16 | OV

Posted on 02/14/2016 9:47:13 PM PST by OneVike

I have been a member of FreeRepublic since February 1998, and in all my years I have ever seen so many Freepers support, and defend such a leftist candidate as Donald Trump. In the old days, any candidate that spouted the rhetoric coming out of his mouth would have been received with unanimous hatred from Freepers.

Mitt Romney was met with scorn when he claimed to have changed and was more conservative than his record showed. However, The Donald says the same thing and he is allowed to wear his liberal record as badge of honor, because he has been born again. Never mind that his fruit smells like Skubala. Any Republican candidate in the past who supported partial birth abortion was considered dead on arrival with 99.9% of Freepers. Yet a vast number of Freepers today look at Trump's defense of PP, and attack the candidate who dares to bring it up at a debate.

Thinking I have stumbled in some black hole of Bizzaro World, I decided to spend most the night, after the debate yesterday, researching past posts and comments of many Freepers who support Trump. I must admit that I wasn't too shocked to see that not all, but the vast majority, of his supporters have joined FR within the last 8 years. However I pretty much only searched the opinions of his most ardent supporters.

Interestingly enough, the ones I researched, all demanded that both Houses of Congress go after Planned Parenthood for selling baby parts. Many of them even demanded that the House use their power of the purse to defund PP. Yet these very same individuals defend, and make excuse for Trump's defense of said abortion factory, or at least claim it's bothersome but will still support him. These same individuals, however, were demanding McConnell resign for failing to pass legislation in the senate defunding PP. I did similar searches on their opinions of various other topics that Trump defends which would normally be cause of revulsion from these supporters had it been any other politician.

Well, I must admit that I am rather stunned by the way they have so easily changed their stances.

Who would have known that those who accused Jimmy Carter of never meeting a dictator and communist he didn't like, would now tout that his endorsement of Trump is not Trumps problem, and some even claim it will help him with Democrat voters in November. So we are now to welcome a politician that will get votes from leftists?

I thought the idea was to win them over to conservatism, not to abandon our beliefs just to get them to vote for our guy. So when will Freepers decide we need to change our stances on topics like "Black Lives Matter" to get more blacks to vote for our guy, or maybe we can find a good Muslim candidate who has made billions and talks a good game. Hey, so what if he may support Sharia law, just think of all those Muslim votes we can get from refugees Obama shipped in and we could actually own Dearborn Michigan. There has got to be some great female politicians who support PP that we could get behind, After all, we do have a problem with the female vote, right?

Yea, I'm just an old timer with old time values from the days when The Donald was still giving money to the Clintons and laughing at Republicans for making such a big deal over BJs in the Oval Office. Yup, just a geezer who remembers the wall of separation set up by Jamie Gorelick to keep Clinton from being prosecuted over Witewater which led to the attack on 9/11.

I guess I'm a conspiracy believer who thinks 9/11 was Clinton's fault, not GW's, and that the Weapons of Mass Destruction the NY Times finally admitted existed were originally sold to the public by the Clinton's to help get the Democrats on board for the war on Iraq.

Those were the good old days when we used to rip apart fake politicians for trying too hard to fit into our club, instead of ripping the messengers for noticing a fake when we see one.

Yea, that was before FreeRepublic jumped the Shark.

Right now many people are in the denial stage. “Trump isn’t real. People supporting him are not going to vote, or are stupid, mislead, liars, you know, not conservative.”

After Trump wins Super Tuesday on 1 March, a lot of this changes to extreme anger, but it will be much less hopeful.

After Trump wins a few more elections, will come bargaining.... “Why doesn’t he hand the reins over to a real conservative? He’s made his point.”

And after a few more elections, will come depression. “Trump is going to win. We are doomed.”

Finally, by the time of the Convention will come acceptance.

Agree 100%

The FRumpsters now sound like Salon, D.U. & Kos kids parroting Trump's liberal talking points on Iraq.

And it's like Trump has not a clue that Planned Parenthood sells its aborted baby parts for profit.

Their future President mocks a disable reporter and they just laugh.

And Ted Cruz, with Mike Lee, the only two Senators pushing back against Obama, Mitch McConnell and the GOP is now the devil incarnate.

Free Republic has indeed jumped the shark.

I have never looked for an alternative Conservative site since I joined, but that is something I'm considering.

Actually, I am hoping the zealots would leave the party for the political promised land. 40 years in the wilderness would do them some good.

Can a conservative be a person who does not share your religion/faith? How about a Jew?

We'll still get blamed for everything, FRiend. ;)

I’m going to lobby President Trump to relocate the Yucca Mountain project to Texas since so much nuclear waste comes out of your mouth.

Don’t buy it. Planed parenthood is all about the abortions. There are already places that take care of the rest

Not true! I went to Planned Parenthood as a young lady for birth control pills. It's where all the young marrieds in the midwest went to get birth control. Course that was many, many years ago but I'd probably never heard of abortion at that time.

I support Ted Cruz, but would vote for Trump. My fear is that Trump is on a mission to win the nomination and then fumble. Trump comes across as such a big ass that I find it hard to believe that he has the support he has.

unless you stop illegal immigration you will have no more country let alone a Free Republic in a few years.. I don’t recognize my small town in SC anymore where now half the people in it don’t speak English,, and this has happened all in the last 15 years,,, it won’t be long until we are outnumbered by Hispanics in our own town if we don’t stop it very soon.. there is only ONE person who had the brass ones to make stopping illegal immigration the forefront and number one issue of his campaign and has taken all the slings and arrows to do so.. maybe you can understand where a lot of us are coming from now..

What you said! Congress has had plenty of opportunity to fix this and they won't. Why? Because they are bought out by big money - all of them! DT isn't. My best and last hope.

Sorry, but God opened our borders to destroy us because we continually consider abortion to of second, third, or fourth importance.

Really? You are God's appointed spokesperson? He told you this? So you are fine with having open borders until abortion is outlawed? Is that what you are saying? And which of the candidates is going to end abortion? Reagan didn't. Bush 1 didn't. Bush 2 didn't. So who is going to be this time that is going to end it?

The problem is that politicians that have had a history of being conservative seem to turn SHARP LEFT once reaching the peak of their power.

Given that, it’s hard for us to say who’s worse: McConnel/Boener for funding ALL of Planned Parenthood, or Trump for supporting PART of Planned Parenthood.

Like it or not, we’re pretty much out of luck, regardless of who we support, so we might as support the guy who will give the GOPe a POUNDING, given everything else is a crap shoot.

My reason for not supporting Trump is his pattern of inconsistency; he has no guiding philosophy other than “whatever works.” As such, voting for him is choosing the proverbial pig in the poke. I don’t want to be governed according to whatever wild hair happens to be tickling his backside on a given day.

Of course I read what I posted. Did you? I pointed out that Cruz gave a vague answer where he talked about building wall(s), not a wall, but walls, and gave no specifics about how many miles he would build.

Cruz gave an interview 4 years ago where he was asked if he was in favor of building a border wall. He didn’t even bring up the issue on his own but was merely responding to a question about whether he supported building a border wall. His answer? “I’m in favor of walls, fences, drones, anything that works’. And you consider that a ringing endorsement for building a border wall? Anyone with half a brain can see how much wiggle room he leaves for himself with that answer.

Cruz was asked about building a wall and he answered like a good politician with a vague, CYA answer designed to satisfy everyone but give as few specifics as possible. How many miles of fences and walls does Cruz propose? It could be 10 miles of fence and 10 miles of wall. He never specifies, then after this interview which took his supporters all these months to find, Cruz went virtually silent on the issue until 4 years later, when Trump made building a wall a central issue in his campaign and forced him to talk about it. If you think this is proof that Cruz wants to build a significant border wall, you’re drinking some very strong Kool Aid.

Trump has made it clear that he plans to build a significant stretch of wall that will cover the entire border, minus some stretches that have natural barriers. He’s given a figure of about 2,000 miles. These are the facts.

I’ve been trying to temper my remarks in case I am forced to pull the lever for Trump just to stop the old communists, but by God, I agree with you. Just a few short months ago we were excited about our deep field of candidates, now, it’s a race to see who can embrace more liberal claptrap as cover for the Donald.

Donald Trump is a populist, pure and simple. He appeals to our basest instincts, and conservatives have taken the bait. He has no philosophical or ethical foundation.

I will admit that he seems to love the USA, but that along with “build a wall” shouldn’t be enough qualification to be chief executive from a party whose beliefs he does not seem to agree with.
