Fellow Freepers: I will be visiting Cassino, Italy and the mountaintop Monastery of Monte Cassio next month for a writing project on the Polish II Corps. I am aware of the Polish Cemetery, but would appreciate any information on off-the-beaten-path monuments. Also, it you have any recommendations on restaurants and wineries in the area (especially those smaller local restaurants you won't find on the tourist websites) along with any "must try" dishes.
Thanks in advance!

None, but I’m super jealous! Enjoy, and please post pics and food reviews!

Go with the Italian food.
See if you can find an Olive Garden.
See if Rick Steve’s has any suggestions in his books. He’s a BIG Italy tour operator, TV travel host, writer and fan.
Example...I visited Venice (years ago). His book gave specific directions to the “public transportation workers” cafeteria near the main train station on the Grand Canal. The cafeteria was open to the public, but not advertised as such (or even visually noticeable from the sidewalk). Meals were great, bountiful and cheap. There was coffee bar and a regular bar.
His books often have many suggestions that save time, money, and offer good value.

Thanks, I will do my best to get some good pics.

That will be right next to the golden arches, right?
You trying to make us jealous that you’re going to Italy? Pretty pathetic.
Thanks for the trip advisor list...I had not thought to look at them, but it looks like there are a number of great places listed.
Thanks, moovova... I will check out Rick Steve’s book...
It has been a while since I was stuck in New Orleans.....I went to high school just up the river, in Donaldsonville. I had several interesting adventures involving alcohol in the Quarter back in the day....
Wait, I can get Italian food there? Who does the cooking?
You can walk into any Trattoria at random and pretty much be assured of a great meal at a decent price. The less fancy, the more decent the price.
You can also have a beer with your Big Mac at any McDonald’s.
I think there’s a Pizza Hut down the street, too with a Chinese place next door.
Try the buffet.
:-p
Thanks, Larry...... Trattorias are probably the “sweet spot” I am looking for. In Germany, you can find a great sit down meal in just about any gasthaus at a very decent price and a fast meal at schnel imbiss. Where do Trattorias fit in on this scale?
As far as wines go, do you have any suggestions? I like a standard Cabernet with red meat or Pino Girogio with fish — the middle ground (what the Germans call “halb-trocken” or “half-dry”) I don’t care for real dry or sweet wines.
Thanks again!
Bill
Thanks for the pics..... I’ll try not to get “Godfathered” while there!
Not much of a wine connoisseur. If I was with Italian relatives I let them pick out the wines (in the house it was usually a white or pink dinner wine served by the jug). If I was out by myself, it was beer (any Italian brand) or Coke.
I only frequented places labeled “trattoria” or “pizzeria” (their flat pizza with fresh mozzarella and anchovies is awesome) depending on what I felt like. One of my favorites in a trattoria was gnocchi with a side of grilled Italian sausage. I could never get them to bring both out at once. In Italy, it’s pasta first, then the meat dish. Personally, I think they go together just fine.
