Mum of boy who fell into gorilla zoo enclosure blasts critics saying 'accidents happen'

The mother of the boy who fell into a gorilla enclosure has said that "accidents happen" on a Facebook post hitting out at critics.

The endangered animal was shot dead by zoo staff to protect the four-year-old after it began dragging him around.

Michelle Gregg has faced criticism for social media users and animal rights campaigners, who claim she should have been keeping a closer eye on her child.

Some animal lovers even suggested she should have been shot and killed instead of the gorilla Harambe.

Responding to the criticism on Facebook, she said: "I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers today. What started off as a wonderful day turned into a scary one.

"For those of you that have seen the news or been on social media that was my son that fell in the gorilla exhibit at the zoo. God protected my child until the authorities were able to get to him.

Where’s the FATHER????

Unfortunately the mom was forced to take down her Facebook page due to threats. Can't find much info on the family yet.

and what do you think about the mother being a terrible mother and having an animal killed for no reason. Not a rat. a monkey. of course the child had to be safe first but that animal’s life has value even if you don’t think so

I believe we’re gonna find out there is no biological father in the house to sit on the little monster and make him behave. Obvious from the FB image that mom can’t handle him, otherwise he wouldn’t have been allowed to pose as a badass with his arms crossed and a scowl on his mug. Mom at the zoo with all the children, and perhaps with other moms and their families, too. Easy to see how the stubborn future-felon was determined to get his way and crawl into the gorilla enclosure. Too dangerous a situation for the staff to have acted any differently, but ironic that a 17 y/o, 450 lb. silverback male, for even a few brief moments, set the tough guy straight.

I hope that zoo loses its gorillas to a more responsible and well-managed option.

I will admit that there is no way that child should have been able to get into that enclosure.

With that being said, the only viable solution to save that child was the killing of the gorilla.......

That was a full grown male gorilla that was already on edge when we witnessed it grab the kid by the arm and take off across that waterway. There was no telling what could or would have happened after that.....

They have incredible strength and according to Jack Hanna who was interviewed this morning, he has witnessed them crush coconuts with one hand.........It's unlikely it could have been bribed into letting the child go by offering it a banana.......

It’s amazing how fast kids move. It’s like they have no bones the way they can shimmy under bars and through windows. It’s too bad it happened but better one live kid and one dead monkey, I say.

You were there? If not STFU.

I don't need to be there to understand things - I'm able to apply intelligence and knowledge in order to understand them. I'm sorry if you have problems with comprehension, but the rest of us don't share your limitations. Oh, and STFU.

I have grown up twins. Sometimes I’m amazed they made it to adulthood. They were much more difficult than their older brother.

They were escape artists: climbed out of their cribs at around a year, could climb safety fences soon afterward, could get out of strollers and cars eats easily, and knew to move a chair to the door and unlatch the chain by 2.

They are very sweet young ladies now and we all laugh at their shenanigans.

That's true. Once the kid got in the enclosure and the keepers couldn't get the gorilla way from that child, there was no alternative but to put the animal down - there's no telling what might have happened to the child. But the zoo should have done a far better job of securing the enclosure, and the mother should have done a far better job of minding her child.

pogo, pogo, if you know that, you need to take extra measures to ensure it is minimized. Especially where animals are involved. That being said, parents are humans, too, and will always make these mistakes.

There are images of me as a shaver on a child’s leash, with my mother holding on as the family, all bundled up, stood outside on the Eiffel Tower observation deck on a cold, blustery day. Dad not in the pictures; he was the photographer!

Of course people are way more important than any animal. It’s the events leading up to the loss that have folks upset.

Been to that zoo took 3 kids and first wife, didn’t lose a one. Did have thoughts of throwing ex into the polar bear enclosure. It was a very hot day.

I wonder why they just couldnt tranquilize the gorilla rather than kill him.
