HAL: I’m sorry, Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that.

Look Dave, I can see you’re really upset about this. I honestly think you ought to sit down calmly, take a stress pill, and think things over.
To: EveningStar
Without your space helmet, you may find that most difficult.

Oh, happy birthday, “Dave”!
I always name my desktops Hal, and my laptops Sal. Once, I even downloaded sound clips so that my computer would talk like Hal. The error messages would be “What do you think you are doing, Dave?”

Open the pod bay door, HAL.
I saw that movie first run when I was about 12 on a YUGE! screen it one of the old Cinema theaters. It made quite an impression.

Is Poole’s family going to sing to him, too?
Happy Birthday, Dave.

Same here. I was 12 also. The Clairidge theatre in Montclair, N.J. It was a Cinerama road show. Single projection 70 MM print. HUGE!

Our high school Aerospace Science class took a field trip to see 2001 at the Cinerama in Seattle. I’ll never forget Dave Bowman slowly unplugging Hal.....

Have met him and the fellow who played Poole a couple times at movie conventions, where they are often seated together. Both very nice fellows who seem to be friends.

It made quite an impression. I saw it in my early 20's and it made a huge impression on me as well. It also set the bar for following SF movies.

Ill never forget Dave Bowman slowly unplugging Hal..... Me neither. So satisfying! I loved how grim he was, he'd totally, completely had it. HAL was going down if it was the last thing Bowman ever did. All while HAL kept prattling on, trying to stop him. Beautiful scene.
