At least 4 feared dead after tsunami in Greenland

Four people are feared dead after tsunami waves struck the coast of Greenland on Saturday night.

A 4.1 magnitude earthquake, which struck 28 kilometres north of the northwest village of Nuugaatsiaq, is believed to have partially triggered the tsunami, according to a report from Kalaallit Nunaata Radioa, the national broadcaster in Greenland.

The local newspaper, Sermitsiaq, reported that the four feared dead were inside their home in Nuugaatsiaq when waves struck and swept the structure into the ocean.

KNR says Nuugaatsiaq has been evacuated, adding that the waves also struck the communities of Uummannaq and Illorsuit. A helicopter and boats have been deployed to assist in the search and rescue effort.

Based on the magnitude, we suspect it wasn't the earthquake itself that triggered the tsunami, but in all likelihood, the earthquake triggered an underwater landslide, and that is what triggered the tsunami," said Allison Bent, a seismologist with Natural Resources Canada.

I went to a Emergency Plan delivered talk last week in Oregon.

The last 9.0 strength earthquake off the Oregon coast was in January, 1700. Looking at 9 earthquakes since the time of Christ, approximately every 300 years one of these quakes hits.

Obviously, the next one is due soon based on the periodicity of previous events. The Emergency Planning Representative said due to the size of the earthquake, there likely would be no power and no official warnings. The large tsunami similar to Japan's 2011 event will hit the Oregon coast as soon as 15 minutes after the earthquake stops. In other words, the earthquake IS the tsunami warning.

The average Oregon resident will wait for the government to tell them a tsunami is coming. Many of the towns on the Oregon coast are located near rivers, just above sea level.

Based on the average person out here according to what I heard, they expect massive loss of life when the next big one happens. The Emergency Plan rep showed a video with the Japanese in 2011 ignoring warnings and watching the tsunami flood their town AND then they ran. MANY of them didn't make it.

Subduction zone earthquakes are the most likely to produce tsunamis although landslides and thrust faults can as well (a subduction fault is actually a special case of a thrust fault). There is a long zone offshore in the pacific NW and will be a bad one. Signs of the last one can be found up the Coos River among other places. Looking up at the deposits the last tsunami made is just plain scary.

Many people living in tornado alley also have a lackadaisical attitude towards alarms. Here is Oregon’s plans...

I always think Biblically about this stuff. I was wondering if the Great Earthquake is what takes out all the coastal cities that are prophesied against.

I always think Biblically about this stuff. I was wondering if the Great Earthquake is what takes out all the coastal cities that are prophesied against.

I spent over a month in Yellowstone last summer and then I wintered over in Desert Hot Springs, Ca right on the Saint Andres Fault. I think I remember the last earthquake there was like 1955 and mag about 6. But up here in Oregon, the 9 followed by a 50 to 130 ft. Tsunami (depending on who you believe) is going to kill a lot of people.

Thank you for the link to Oregon's coastal brochures. I have looked up every one as I have traveled up the coast. As I talk to people with Oregon license plates, I don't think it's always lackadaisical attitudes, it's just they don't know that down on the coast, the tsunami following the big earthquake is historically huge, and it will arrive just a few minutes after the quake stops.

I watched this documentary on YOUTUBE last night. They seemed to have done a decent job. I am no longer a total clueless Fla tourist out here. The Emergency Coordinator I talked to spoke about Hurricanes but they are nothing compared to what is coming out here. Well, I do remember Hugo (South Carolina, 1989), that one was something but most are not nearly that severe.

What people forget is that our morality has more to do with disaster than our farts.
