Groundbreaking 'quarksplosion' discovery can make ten times as much energy as nuclear fusion

Study found elementary particles called quarks release energy when fused

Certain types can produce eight times more energy than hydrogen fusion

It's so powerful that the researchers at first hesitated to publish the work

“If it works, lets use it for a better bomb.”

Well, we don’t need anything BIGGER than the 8mt warheads we now have.

However, if you can make them really, really small and lightweight...and eliminate the fallout...that would make for a BETTER bomb.

Now that the cat’s out of the bag, we have to lead. We cannot be late to this party.

Actually, your comment in jest that all scientific discoveries should be classified is actually true in real life.

I'm familiar with two radical advancements, both by private companies, where one was classified after patenting then disappeared into dark programs. The second one involved electronics and the company kept the knowledge proprietary without a patent application. They defended against intellectual theft of key components by encapsulating in an epoxy block so that they would be destroyed if a pirate, etc tried to access for reverse engineering and never sold any product to a federal agency so they would not show up on their radar.

They’re going to keep monkeying around with these fundamental particles and forces until they annihilate the whole friggin universe! :0

For heavens sakes. Don't get hysterical. They're talking theoretically. It's called The Big Bang Theory. It couldn't happen two times in a row . . I don't think.

Given the initial implications, the researchers considered not publishing their findings.

After further calculations, however, they found that they could not produce chain reactions with quarks, as they quickly decay into smaller, less dangerous particles.

For now, the researchers say the work remains theoretical. With experiments at facilities such as the Large Hadron Collider (pictured), though they say the reaction should be feasible

A rather silly notion.

Considering the amount of energy necessary to break apart protons in to quarks that quickly decay away the idea of fusing quarks together again to produce energy seems like the a snake eating its tail kind of notion.

I would guess that the thermodynamic equations would be heavily negative.

Unless you can find a reaction that produces quarks in quantity with little energy input the chances of making use of the reaction is nil.

I doubt that there have been any free quarks around fusing together since the first nanosecond after the Big Bang.

I would think fall out as impossible to eliminate. Even a fire cracker has fall out, it’s just a side effect of blowing chit up. Of course if we could create massive nuclear scale explosions while eliminating long term radiation problems then perhaps that’s possible somehow.

Well Fusion has tended to be more energetic than fission. So maybe it’s the same with splitting a proton into quarks and muons or whatever they are made of.

E = mc^2

m = mass, in kilograms
E = Energy, in joules
c = Speed of Light, in kilometers per sec (300,000km/s)

In other words, if you weigh, say, 160lbs, or 72.6kg, the amount of energy contained in your body is

E = (72.6) x (300,000) x (300,000) = 72.6 x 90,000,000,000 =
474,368,400,000,000 joules, or 4.7 x 10^15 joules

I believe I got this right.

If so, try not to "gulp" too strongly when you read the final figure at the very bottom (in bold type)...

One megaton is equivalent to 4.18 x 10^15 joules”

Well Fusion has tended to be more energetic than fission.

True.

But it is also much more difficult to produce.

I believe the just last year Fusion finally reached unity where the energy produced was equal to the input more than 60 years after we did the same thing with fission.

Sure, Fusion has the greater potential than fission but we are still a long way from realizing that potential.

Deuterium and tritium the fuel for fusion are easily available. So, there is a possible future for practical power production from fusion. That can’t be said for quark fusion.

I just don’t see this going anywhere anytime soon. It is a theory without any potential for practice.
