Calling All Freeper Gearheads!
Let's talk about first cars! What was you first vehicle? What did you like most about the car? What drove you nuts? Do you wish that you still had it?
1968 Chebby van. Shagg’in wagon. The lousy mileage drove me crazy but I never stayed in a motel.
1971 Opel GT, 1985. Loved the cornering. Hated that when I hit the brakes the wheel must be braced against a violent lurch to the left, and the steering wheel spinning to the left. Spinning with enough force to take your thumbs off without a strong grip...
Loved that car. Burnt orange. By burnt orange I really mean that. Burnt. Orange.
First car.....
1970 Plymouth ‘Cuda 383 4-bbl 4 Speed.
A rusted out beat down POS. I paid $500 for it in August 1977. Had it hauled away as junk in November.
Next bought a 1969 Ford Rustang, 351C automatic. The upper control arm rusted off the mount. Had it hauled off as junk in January 1978
Only $60? Dang!
My first car was pretty mundane, but it served well in college. It was a used Ford Tempo, and that was a solid car...right up until an uninsured driver slammed into it.
1961 white Pontiac Catalina (family car). First I purchased for myself 1968 Silver Pontiac LeMans two door.
My first car that I bought with my own money was a 56 Chevy Bel Air 2 door sedan. I bought it for $100.00 from a co-worker at the garage I worked at. I had to get the car running to drive it home. I would love to still have it.
That was a badass little hoopty.
The engine caught on fire in the parking lot garage of the Sheriff's department and I had to go tell the watch commander I broke the glass on the fire extinguisher and used the firehose to put it out.
I didn't like that. Neither did he.
I should have spent the money to keep it maintained.
I should have had the money, too, I guess.
Also, I was a lazy slacker, so I shouldn't blame my poor Bagmobile.
Yes, I wish I still had that baby. I'd cherry it out and get all the chicks.
Hey, at least it was roomier than a Festiva!
It was in 1967. My first car was a 62 VW bus with sunroof and 23 windows. It had “air conditioning”. That is - a rusty hole in the floor on the drivers side. $600.
I was a surfer on the Washington coast and was in heaven with this!! Just like California - only about 25 degrees cooler water.
Little did I know then that this would become a highly collectable car.
The first car I bought was a 1967 Chevy Biscayne with a straight 6, three on the tree, and no vinyl on the front bench seat. Bought it for $100 in 1978.
The first vehicle I bought was a 1978 Honda XL250S motorcycle, brand new in 1978. I bought the Biscayne to get me through the Idaho winter while stationed at Mtn. Home AFB.
Made it through the winter with the beat up Biscayne, then sold the car for $150 to a scrap yard. Before the next winter, I bought a used 1978 Honda Civic CVCC in 1979 from a sergeant that was deploying overseas. Paid $6,000 for that one and kept it for almost ten years.
73 Nova. Red. 350. Leaf springs were shot so no rear suspension to speak of.
1963, Take out the second seat, throw in some pillows and sleeping bags, "Don't come knockin' if this bus is rockin.'" 'nuff said.
I’ll bite. What was your second car?
1967 Camaro with a Firebird nose. Bought used for $400. Had a lot of fun with it. Finally got rid of it when I had to add a quart of oil every morning.
1976 Jeep CJ-7 Levis Renegade in Denim Blue.
Crap 304 engine and 3-=speed tranny but it was damned fun!
Lucky you! I miss my 76 Carrera to this day!
